Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kansas, following a short illness. He was born May 15, 1928, in rural McCune, Kansas, to Charley J. and Winnie Leona (Bell) Darland. He graduated from McCune High School and attended Labette Community College. He lived in Strauss, KS, before moving to Pittsburg, KS in 1995. He married Donna Mullen. They later divorced. He married Barbara Mielke on Sept. 10, 1991, in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives at the home. He worked as a section supervisor for the United States Census Bureau for 30 years. He also ran his own logging business for 37 years before retiring in 1987. Mr. Darland was a member of the Methodist Church in McCune, served as president of Government Union Local of Pittsburg for five years and volunteered for special projects for Pittsburg State University. He coached fast pitch girls softball for 10 years. He was a PSU football fan, loved gardening, trapping, hunting and fishing. Other survivors include two daughters, Karla Williams of Pittsburg, KS, and Kim Clausen of Cherokee, KS; four stepsons, Wes Cronister, and Scott Cronister, both of Mulberry, KS, Aaron Cronister of Joplin, MO, and Matt Cronister of Neosho, MO; six grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Billy V. Darland Jr. The service was at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home with the Rev. Jamie Tickel officiating. Burial was at McCune City Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Bill and Barbara Darland Football Athletic Scholarship Fund at PSU. *******************
