She was born May 17, 1920, to Charles Edward and Edith (Green) Brackett at the Dell Ranger Station on Big Sheep Creek, where her father worked as a ranger. Because her father was transferred wherever the U.S. Forest Service needed him, Blanche lived in Big Piney, Wyo.; Elko, Nev.; and Weiser, Idaho. She was born May 17, 1920, to Charles Edward and Edith (Green) Brackett at the Dell Ranger Station on Big Sheep Creek, where her father worked as a ranger. Because her father was transferred wherever the U.S. Forest Service needed him, Blanche lived in Big Piney, Wyo.; Elko, Nev.; and Weiser, Idaho. Her father purchased a ranch near Plains and Blanche attended grades 3-8 at the Lynch Creek School. She fondly recalled that Mrs. Wood (Marie Pilgeram) was one of her teachers. Mrs. Wood wrote in Blanche's photo album: "A girl who is always ready to do things and do them well." In order to graduate from the eighth grade, Blanche rode a horse to Ruth Benedick's ranch where the state examination was being given. After she spent three years at Plains Public High School, Charlie Brackett accepted a promotion, and the family moved to Billings, where Blanche graduated from high school in 1938. Between 1938 and 1942, Blanche attended Montana State College in Bozeman and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. In order to help pay for tuition, Blanche worked as a cook for Ms. Harrison, the dean of women at MSC, and worked summers at the Gallatin Gateway Inn, which was at that time a railroad stop for tourists bound to and from Yellowstone National Park. Blanche also worked one summer at the Van Cleve Guest Ranch near Melstone. Part of her duties included traveling into the high county with guests as a horse wrangler and camp cook. After graduating from MSC in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in home economics and minors in English and general science, she taught briefly at the Hot Springs school, then signed a contract to teach home economics at Plains Public High School, which she did for 22 years. She also taught English, general science, physical education and served as school librarian for 15 years. Blanche married Carl Leon Richardson at Plains in 1943. They were happily married for 55 years and raised two sons, Stanley and Colin, and one daughter, Kathleen. After retiring from teaching, she served as Plains city librarian for four years and librarian for the "new" Plains Public Library. She later served as chairwoman for the Plains Public Library Foundation, was a member of the Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and for many years was very active in a local bridge club. Blanche lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed deer and elk hunting, fishing and world travel. Later in life, she often mentioned that she felt all the gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and teaching P.E. contributed to her good health. She took a number of tours with Carl that included Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, Germany, Austria and northern Italy. She also made several trips to the Hawaiian Islands. Her grandfather Green had emigrated from the Shetland Islands, and Blanche maintained contact with her cousins who still live there. She took two trips to visit relatives with Carl and her daughter Kathy. Blanche was an avid reader and loved music. She loved listening to her sister Florence McClenahan play the piano, and the two of them spent many evenings together watching their favorite TV programs and the Irish Tenors music videos. In the summers, she found time to raise flowers, being particularly fond of roses. Blanche and Carl always had a collection of pet cats and dogs, pheasants and peacocks. She loved gardening and canned much of her fresh produce. She never lost her interest in natural science and, as she put it, "this marvelous Earth on which we live!" Even in her later years, Blanche found time to cook. She loved baking pastries and shared them with everyone who came within reach. Her lemon meringue pies were winners at the Sanders County Fair and her fine cooking expanded many a waistline. She was still baking wonderful cookies and excellent cherry pies, trying new recipes and fixing lunch every Wednesday for her son Stan until illness prevented it. To her last day, she was always concerned that visitors at least had some type of refreshment. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Richardson; son, Colin Richardson; brother, Charles "Chuck" Brackett; and sisters, Helen Ann Cole and Florence McClenahan. She is survived by her son, Stan Richardson of Thompson Falls; daughter, Kathy McEldery of Plains; as well numerous grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Cremation arrangements are with Sunset Hills Funeral Home in Plains. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Plains Methodist Church. Interment of the cremains at the cemetery will follow the memorial service. A luncheon will be provided at the Methodist church after the ceremony at the cemetery. Blanche requested that memorial donations be made to the Plains Public Library District.
