She died at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on Dec. 3, 2004, at the age of 82 years. She was one of four children in the family. The community where Blanche was born is no longer there, but was located in Jefferson county. She was proud of that, and took us to the site of the town many times where we were on family drives or collecting bittersweet for our fall arrangements or decorating graves in Alexandria. Blanche started school in Helvey and also attended the country school near there before moving with her family to Geneva. Her parents instilled family values in all their children. They spent time with relatives and shared their lives with each other. Blanche's siblings, Charles and Marian, have stayed close and shared family ties their entire lives. They also had a sister, Carol, who died in an automobile accident when she was 15. Blanche graduated from Geneva High School and worked in the home of Earl Wilkins family, and later at the Geneva State Bank prior to getting married in 1934. Blanche was married to Bill Shaner on May 5, 1943, while he was in the service and stationed at Waco, Texas during the war. They had three children, Becky, Carol and Mike. Some of their favorite family memories were summer vacations, holidays and getting together with relatives. Blanche has ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who constantly filled her life with exciting surprises, letters, pictures, calls and visits. She wasn't an all the time babysitter and made that pretty clear from the beginning, but that made the kids times with Grandma really special. She made it so fun for them. She bowled for a long time and enjoyed her bowling friends and their accomplishments and good times together. Blanche really had five loves in her life, her family, her Nebraska sports (sports in general), her trips to Colorado and Michigan and finally, Sanibel Island, Fla. She and Bill did everything together and raised their children with love and support through all the good times and the not so good times that all families have. Probably one of the saddest times in her life was when Bills health didn't allow him to stay home any longer, and she had to let him go to a nursing home where he could receive the care he needed. She visited as often as she could until she got sick, but she knew in her heart that he was being well taken care of. What Blanche did really well was to make memories. Those who knew her well, most likely have some of your own. She made everything an adventure for her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews as well. Whether it was a weekend at Lovewell Lake or a Sunday hike down the railroad tracks, a marshmallow roast or a walk around the townshe made everything fun. She was a very private person, but her close friends and relatives and their children also knew a side of Blanche that was warm, caring, fun and adventurous. They celebrated the Fourth of July together each year and had great fun, enjoying each other as well as everyone's families. Many years they rang in the New Year together and rumor has it that the whole gang marched and danced around single file, banging on pots and pans to the tune "Oh When the Saints Come Marching In." She was straight forward and told you just how it was whether you always wanted to hear it or not. She never beat around the bush and you knew just where you stood with her. She was generous with time for all her family but, don't bother her when there was a Nebraska game of some kind on that she was going to watch on TV or listen to on the radio. That was her time and family or not, Nebraska Sports did have some priority. She was an avid Nebraska fan. She and Bill attended Nebraska football and basketball for years both in and out state, with many football trips to all the Big 8 schools. She would usually defend Nebraska no matter what the controversy and you had best not say anything derogatory about players or coaches regardless of the situation until everything was out in the open. Believe me she kept the Big Red faith! Blanche wasn't afraid to die. She did what she could to fight the cancer, but eventually knew that when there was nothing more she could do, she wanted to say her good-byes and let God work his plan. She had her own special relationship with God in that also she was very private. She left this world a better place for those who knew her generous and sharing spirit her traditional family values of remembering and caring for each other and her love for life. She was most happy in the haven she and Bill found in Florida. Sanibel Island was their favorite place to be. The shared their island and its charm with family and friends, but were probably most happy walking the beaches together, picking up shells, riding their bikes, enjoying the weather and just being lazy in the sun. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Carol. She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Becky Reinsch and husband Richard, Carol Bull and husband, Larry; son Mike and wife, Kim; brother, Charles and wife Sally; sister, Marian Bailey and by ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the United Methodist Church in Geneva with Rev. Pat Kelley officiating. Special taped selections What a Wonderful World, There is no Place like Nebraska, and America the Beautiful were played. Private inurnment of the ashes was held at the Geneva Public Cemetery.
