Description	:	Blythe Maxine Thacker, 89, long time elementary school teacher in Mitchell, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Residency Care Center in Scottsbluff. She was born Aug. 16, 1919, at Cheyenne, to Bryce Leroy and Esther (Swass) VanDruff. She was raised in Broadwater and graduated from the Broadwater High School. At the age of 16, she began her teaching career in rural Nebraska in a one-room schoolhouse. She later taught in South Dakota and began teaching in Mitchell in 1959. She was born Aug. 16, 1919, at Cheyenne, to Bryce Leroy and Esther (Swass) VanDruff. She was raised in Broadwater and graduated from the Broadwater High School. At the age of 16, she began her teaching career in rural Nebraska in a one-room schoolhouse. She later taught in South Dakota and began teaching in Mitchell in 1959. While teaching in Mitchell, she graduated from Chadron State College. Through her innate skills, she touched many lives, with an emphasis on teaching her students reading. She retired in 1993 and remained much loved by her former students. She is survived by her sons, Dennis Thacker of Lakewood, Colo., and Max (Sharon) Thacker of LaVista, Neb.; and grandchildren, Bryce, Eric and Kathleen Thacker. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bryce VanDruff; and sisters, Audrey Kloch, and Evelyn Hamilton.
