He was with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Potocnik, sr., on a fishing trip. The father tried desperately to save his son, diving into the water immediately but it was nearly thirty minutes before he could locate the body. The mother hurried into Cherokee from the pit, three miles west and one and one-half miles south of here, and summoned help. Despite efforts to revive the boy, he was pronounced dead by Dr. W.J. Rinehart of Pittsburg, who was called. Lawrence Redd, principal of the Cherokee grade schools, was one of the first persons called. He applied artificial respiration for twenty minutes without reviving a spark of life. Junior Loveland of Kansas City, a former Cherokee resident, was another who assisted in efforts to revive the little fellow. The Pittsburg fire department was called with the resuscitator and firemen worked over the victim nearly an hour before giving up. Coroner Victor Winter of Cherokee County was called to the scene. The tragedy happened at the close of a fishing trip. The father had gone to the car and the boy and his mother were to follow shortly. Bobby apparently stepped on a rock that turned and he plunged into the pit, into a section believed to be about 30 feet deep. Mrs. Potocnik is not able to swim, but plunged into the pit in an effort to grab her son. Realizing he was too far away for her to reach, she ran to the car and called her husband. He plunged into the chilling water and made four dives before locating the body. He was near exhaustion and nearly drowned himself in the rescue attempts. In addition to his parents, Bobby is survived by a brother, Rudy Jr., eight, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Antone Potocnik of Cherokee, RR1, and Mr. and Mrs. James Cunningham of Leota, Kan. Bobby was in the secong grade of the Cherokee schools, and was a bright little fellow. He was on the honor roll for perfect spelling just the day before the accident. He attended the Methodist Sunday school regularly. The other son, Rudy jr. did not go on the fishing trip. Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. G.M. Pierce officiating. Burial was in the Cherokee cemetery. Mrs. Virginia Martino was soloist with Mrs. Helen Conner accompanist. Casket bearers were David M. McCullough, Johnny McCullough, Bobby Hough, August Lee Semonick, Frank McCabe, Melvin Scales, Charles Lapping and Johnny Ascanio.
