She was born Sept. 11, 1921, to Dr. Carl B. and Emma C. (Alm) Benson at Escalon, Calif. She graduated from Modesto High school and then from the University of California at Berkeley in 1942. Merlin, 71, of Wenatchee, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1992, in Central Washington Hospital after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 11, 1921, to Dr. Carl B. and Emma C. (Alm) Benson at Escalon, Calif. She graduated from Modesto High school and then from the University of California at Berkeley in 1942. She met her husband, James Merlin, at college. They were married on Aug. 1, 1942, at Modesto. They lived at Berkeley for three years while he attended seminary and became a pastor. They lived and served at churches at Sandpoint, Idaho, Newport, Waterford, Calif., Eugene, Ore., and Idaho Falls, Idaho. They moved to Cashmere in 1973 when the Rev. Merlin was appointed pastor of the Cashmere First Baptist Church. When the Rev. Merlin retired in 1980, they moved to Wenatchee. Mrs. Merlin was an active church member, a member and past president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a cub scout leader, Sunday school teacher, youth advisor, a member of the University Moms, the Foreign Students Sponsor Association, the United Church Women and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Survivors include her husband, at home; a son, John B. of Bend, Ore.; two daughters, Judy Ross of Albany, Ore., and Jane Shell of East Wenatchee; a brother, Dr. Andrew A. Benson of La Jolla, Calif.; a stepsister, Louise Clark of Stockton, Calif.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister. Arrangements are by Braun Funeral Home at Cashmere.
