Completed recruit training in the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Upon discharge from hospital rejoined B Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines 8 February, 1943 at Paekakariki, New Zealand. 1 April, 1943 promoted to Private First Class. 1 November, 1943 embarked USS Sheridan (APA-51) at Wellington. 7-13 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20-24 November 1943 landed at Red Beach Two and participated in combat operations at Tarawa. 2 December, 1943 arrived at Camp Tarawa, Hawaii. Returned to US and assigned to Casual Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 1-28 January, 1944 on furlough. 29 January 1944 assigned to HQ Company, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 8 February, 1944 assigned as a Mortarman (MOS 607) in B Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendelton, CA. 19 September, 1944 embarked US Navy transport ship for movement overseas. 24 September, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. 10 January, 1945 embarked an LST at Camp Drewes, Hawaii for landing rehearsals. 17 January, 1945 embarked USS Dickens (APA-161) at Lahaini Roads, Maui. 18-27 January, 1945 at Pearl Harbor. 5-7 February, 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11 February 1945 embarked LST 1103 at Saipan. 13 February, 1945 landing rehearsal at Tinian. 16 February, 1945 left Marianas. 19 February, 1945 landed Green Beach Iwo Jima D-Day participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 11 March, 1945. Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Engvald J and Mrs Martha Nelson, Garden City, Iowa. Initially buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery Iwo Jima. 1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Garden City, Iowa.
