McKay, 48, Bismarck, formerly of Hazen, died peacefully Nov. 11, 2003, at a Hazen medical center, with friends and family at her side after a courageous three and a half year battle with kidney cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Dave Suelzle officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. MST Friday at Seibel Funeral Home Chapel, Hazen. Brenda was born April 28, 1955, the daughter of Calvin and Lualice (Elliott) Stiefel. She was raised on the farm north of Stanton, and attended school in Stanton, graduating from high school in May 1974. While attending high school, she worked for Ed and Francis Kilber at the local cafe in town. She learned a lot from both of them in regards to work ethic and responsibility. After high school, she moved to Bismarck, shared an apartment with her good friend Debbie Folk and worked at Kmart. Brenda married Rod McKay on July 2, 1976, in Stanton. The couple made the Stanton area their home until moving to Hazen in 1991. She worked at various jobs in the Stanton, Hazen area until retiring in May 2002, due to her health. She was an active member of the Stanton American Legion Auxiliary for 38 years. Her passions were attending her sons sporting events, and singing with the Bismarck-Mandan Sweet Adelines and her quartet, Mix Blend. Her church and church family were among Brenda's main priorities in life. She took many trips with her family and enjoyed life to the fullest, even after getting such a dismal health prognosis. She faced her illness with a positive attitude and never once questioned why this was happening to her. She always hoped her fight would be an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Brenda was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she loved to sing in the choir. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Rod, Bismarck; two sons, Luke and Preston, Bismarck; her mother and her husband, Dave and Lualice Stockert, Mandan; her in-laws, Phyllis and Helmer Mehl, Bismarck, her sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Darwin Knutson, Stanton; four brothers, Dean and Kelly, both of Stanton, Carlyle, Douglas, Wyo., and Vic, Bismarck; two nieces, Mandy and Teresa, Big Lake, Minn.; one nephew, Aaron Knutson and his wife Beth, Stanton; and her most trusted buddy, Little Newt, her dog. Brenda was preceded in death by her father, Calvin; an aunt and uncle, Ervin and Vera Stiefel; and two cousins, Scott Stiefel and Joan Kerns. The family requests that memorials be made to Sakakawea Hospice in lieu of flowers.
