JAMES DOUGHERTY CALLED IN DEATH From the Dougherty World: On Saturday morning, May 10, at 5 a.m., Mrs. Bridget Dougherty, wife of James Dougherty Jr., gave up the final struggle and passed to receive her heavenly reward. Mrs. Dougherty has been a sufferer for a number of years from nervous attacks and other troubles which at times entirely prostrated her, leaving her for weeks unable to attend to her household duties. While her death was not entirely unexpected, it is a sad blow on her husband and family who is left to mourn her passing away. Deceased was a most exemplary woman. Her entire life was marked by her Christian devotion to God and her family. Her home was her castle, yet she found time to assist others who needed assistance in works of charity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in distress. Mrs. Dougherty will be missed not only by her husband and family, but by the entire community in which she lived. This was clearly demonstrated by the number of friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect to her remains. A constant stream of people from the hour she died until the day of her funeral kept coming from far and near. Her funeral took place on Monday, the 12th, and was one of the largest held in Dougherty for many years. A requiem high mass was celebrated by Father Dougherty, a brother of her husband assisted by Father Hogan of Greene and deacon Fr. Tobin of St. Anthony's Church subdeacon, and Father Bochia of Mason City and Father O'Hagen of this place. Father O'Conner preached the sermon, his subject was "Faith." It was a most scholarly and convincing address and in his closing words, paid a most eloquent tribute to the beautiful Christian life of the deceased and her example to her children in the home of which she was queen. Deceased was born in Dane Co., Wis., May 19, 1868, and had she lived till next Monday, would have been 61 years of age. She came with her parents to Iowa in 1877 and settled on a farm three miles from Dougherty. She was united in marriage to James Dougherty in 1883 by Father Kelly now deceased. She is survived by her husband and five children: William, Ed, Peter, Mrs. Robert Ormsby and Mrs. Ed Sweeney, all of this place together with her brothers, Peter Gorman of this place and Thomas of Auburn, and just two sisters, Mrs. John McGaheran of Rockwell and Mrs. James Smith of Dougherty. We will not attempt to give the names of the many friends who came from a distance but will dot down a few just as they occur. All of these towns were well represented: Mrs. John Wade and daughter from Des Moines and John Dougherty of Camp Dodge who is secretary of the Knights of Columbus; also Judge Wade of Iowa City, Attorney Campbell, wife and daughter of Charles City, Mrs. I.J. Dougherty of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Keefe of Plymouth, Mrs. Hardman of Green, Mrs. Dan Cahalan, Mr. Jas. McGrath, Mr. Matt Nolan and Mr. Will Conners all of Mason City, Mrs. Manie, Mrs. Gallagher and Mrs. J.E. Treston of Rockwell, together with a number of other distant friends whose names would fill a page. May her many virtues and works of charity shine as beacon lights to guide her soul to heaven.
