Thomas had come to America from Mayo County, Ireland, as a lad of about 14 with his widowed mother and family. They lived in Kankakee, Illinois, but the lure of rich prairie farmland brought them to Greene County, Iowa in 1865. They lived on land south of the present town of Churdan. They built a new home on the northwestern part of the farm. ____________________________________________________________ Thomas Fitzpatrick, farmer and stockman, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1852. At the age of fourteen years, he came with his mother and family to America, locating in Kankakee County, Illinois, where they lived for three years when he went to the pineries of Wisconsin and labored three years. He came to Greene County in 1873, locating on section 29, where he bought 120 acres of wild land. In 1883 he married Bridget McCarney, and at once went to housekeeping. He has added to his original farm until he now owns 320 acres well stocked and a very comfortable home. They have had ten children, nine of whom are living: Mary E 15; Nora S 13; Bridget A 12; Bartholomew P 9; Veronica B 7; Rose M 6; Catherine A 5; Thos. CJ 3; Gertrude J 2. The family are ardent Catholics and in politics Thomas is a Republican and at present a twp. trustee. Agnes, Josephine, Colette, Adelaid and Dorothy). In the 1900 U.S. Census, Bridget was the mother of 11 children with 10 living. In the 1910 U.S. Census, Bridget was the mother of 15 children with 13 living. The Fitzpatricks took their wheat to Carroll to be ground into flour. Another long journey with horses and wagons was the trip to Boone where they got their coal. The Fitzpatrick farm became a CENTURY FARM in 1981. Veronica and Eugene Fitzpatrick still lived in the original farm home built east of the homestead. Aloysius (Marie, son and family) lived in the area. Magdalene (Robert) Minnehan and Robert and two of Thomas Jr.'s family: Richard (Ruth) and Margaret (Robert) Vogel and family also lived nearby.
