Those lines from Tennyson just about expressed the emotions of Elizabeth V. O'Brien, chief telephone operator at Minneapolis, when she sauntered into Archie Alexander's office one day recently and was greeted by just about all of the old timers around the passenger station. The occasion was the completion of Miss O'Brien's 35th year of service in the telegraph department and a few of her many friends decided that this event must not pass unmarked and gathered in Mr. Alexander's office to greet her when she reported for work. The welcome and greetings were very spontaneous, to say the least. The gang presented Miss O'Brien with flowers and candy, and letters and telegrams were received from Messrs. Harstad, Porter and Bagnell. In the ordinary course of events, no one has ever known Miss O'Brien to be caught without a witty, quick comeback, but on this occasion words seemed to fail her. However, the beaming smile she bestowed on each friend who called to congratulate her, and the snappy sparkle in her eyes expressed more eloquently than words just how she felt about the fine demonstration of good will and friendship. The thirty-five years just completed by Miss O'Brien have been filled with fine service and loyalty and she commences the 36th year with the very best wishes for her future happiness and good health from her wide circle of friends and business associates. - Hester Kate 'Essie', born 1880 and died July 28, 1892 in Garner, Hancock, Iowa. (Essie - born in Deerfield. She died at an early age and this is one of those confusing family stories. One story goes that she was killed by lightning at the same time as her father. We know this is not true, as she is not mentioned in the article. Neither is she listed as one of his survivors, so she must have died before he did. The other story is that she was killed by lightning one day while taking lunch to her father in the field. That she and her father would both have been killed by lightning on separate occasions seems highly coincidental.The records of the cemetery and churches at Britt and Dougherty have no record of her so she must have died before they moved to Iowa. Information from a typed letter from Olive White on June 5, 1995: "The story about Essie being killed by lighting is true and there was also one of the sons was killed by lighting. Ma Boyer was very afraid of storms, she got the Holy Water and candles out until the storm was over." - James Linford 'Lin', born December 17, 1884 in Rockwell City, Calhoun, Iowa and died May 24, 1931 in North Strater, near Malta, Phillips, Montana and married Ellen Maria Foley April 18, 1906. He is buried in Malta, Montana. He was only 46 years old, when he was kicked by a horse out on his farm, he suffered a broken leg, was taken to the hospital in the back of a pick-up truck. Later he was recuperating at his home when he got a blood clot from his leg and it passed to his heart, stopping it. It happened in the middle of the night. Only my Mother and my younger brother and myself were at home at the time, I was only nine years of age then so I don't remember much of my 'Papa', as we kids called him, I do remember he was tall, 6' and very slender and had wavy auburn hair and blue eyes.He wore glasses some of the time. Would say he was a strict Papa and we kids always obeyed him at once. My younger brother Pat and I used to crawl on his back and play when he knelt to say his prayers at night, he would never tell us to quit. That is about all I remember about him, but it is a nice memory. A horse kicked him in his leg and broke it and he was in the hospital and then they sent him home and in those days they told him to stay in bed, which he did and he got a blood clot that traveled to his heart and stopped it the Drs. said. My dad was not born in Ireland. He was born in Rockwell, Iowa. His Mom and Dad were born in Ireland. My mother was Irish too, so I am full blooded Irish.) - Ada Bell, born November 6, 1886 in Dougherty, Cerro Gordo, Iowa and died February 1959 in Iowa City, Johnson, Iowa, married Herman A W Horstman January 22, 1910 - Lawrence 'Larry and LA' Aloysius, born February 14, 1887 in Dougherty, Cerro Gordo, Iowa and died September 16, 1965 in Seattle, King, Washington and married Arlene 'Arlie' Edna Connelly. He lived in Cartwright, North Dakota, later in Montana, and then moved to Seattle where he made his living as a banker and a lawyer. According to Aunt Goldie they lost several children. He and his brother, Linford, were avid and accomplished musicians and played the mandolin.)
