He was an honorable man in every way, much respected by the people. The funeral services were held at the house, consisting simply of prayer by Mr. Blair and singing. A very pretty and appropriate offering sent by a friend lay upon the casket. It consisted of a bunch of fully ripened wheat tied with a know of white ribbon. Grandpa Alden, as he was familiarly called, has certainly gone "in the full strength of years." Few attain to such an age. According to Iowa Cemetery Records, his wife Susan's stone was next to his with the inscription "Wife of Briggs". Her stone is no longer there. 1880 US Census lists Briggs birthplace as New York and his occupation as minister. Note: Briggs Alden was born Sept. 4, 1796 in Otsego, NY. He moved west with the Mormons and his father and son Stephen K. Alden. His first wife was Maria King. (She probably died in New York before 1840.) His second wife was Lydia Harrington whom he divorced due to her abandoning him when she left for Utah to be with her children. He waited a year before filing for divorce. His last wife was Susan Russell whom he married May 8, 1864 in Kendall County Illinois.
