He was born October 19, 1947, in San Francisco, CA, the son of Russell and Merelyn (Carter) Harberts. He is survived by his Mother, his Daughter, Shelly (Ken) Fogt, 2 sisters, Lee Ann (Don) Gutknecht, Jean (Marc) Polk Pinkerton, 1 brother, Mark (Rose) Harberts. Bruce has 3 Grandchildren, Riley & Reece Gilbert and Elly Fogt, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins and a very special friend, Sandra Scobee, who took very good care of Bruce to the very end of his life. Bruce was preceded in death by his Father, Russell and Sister Rosemary. He belonged to the Ascension Lutheran Church in Waterloo, where services will be held May 8, 2021 at 10:30 am. His remains will be escorted to Colfax Center Cemetery, Holland, Iowa, at a later date where there will be a private family burial. Published by Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier on May 2, 2021. A beautifully written tribute by Sandra Scobee. This special tribute to Bruce's memory will as Paul Harvey used to say, tell "the rest of the story." But only a very small part of it. It would take a novel to capture all of his unique personality. Bruce loved and was loved by so many people in so many different walks of life, it is truly amazing. He learned at an early age to handle conflict, and he joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17. He served two tours of active duty, stationed part of that time in Viet Nam, advancing rapidly, receiving several merit awards. His expertise in handling and maintaining military trucks was highly valued. Upon discharge, he gave many more years to the Marine Corps Reserves. Bruce was very proud of being a Marine. He also served as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, escorting many veterans to their final resting place. Bruce held several jobs in his lifetime including managing a service station, driving semi, and working for contractors before starting his own business, Saw Dust City. His last position and one of his favorites was hauling heavy equipment for Cunningham Construction in his beloved old Peterbilt truck. He excelled at driving big rigs and could park them and equipment anywhere it needed to be. He also loved his part-time position driving school bus for St. Patrick's School and totally adored all the school kids, pre-school tots, teachers, and staff. It was obvious they loved him also for his fun and caring nature. His room was full of cards and drawings the students made for him. He had many different interests and hobbies. He could make almost anything out of wood. He was known throughout the Cedar Valley, Cedar Rapids, Northeast and Northwest Iowa for dancing. He also made innumerable friends at many small restaurants. If there was a good place to eat, Bruce could direct you to it. In addition to his fun side, he had a heart for community service and believed in giving back. He was a big part of the Three B's (Bucky, Brian, and Bruce) who have held a charity barn dance at the Electric Park in Waterloo the past 14 years, raising 1,000s of dollars for non-profit organizations. He was a proud member of the El Kahir Shrine as a licensed clown and rode his small clown car in many parades. If Bruce could make you smile, he felt he won. He also belonged to the Waterloo Eagles and was often seen there gliding around the dance floor. Last, but certainly not the least, Bruce loved his Lord and was a member of Ascension Lutheran where his service will be held May 8 at 10:30 AM. There will be no visitation but friends and family who loved him are welcome to attend to honor his life and pay their last respects.
