Burger died last Sunday at 7:30 a.m. in Shelbina at the home of E. W. Harland, a brother Odd Fellow. His remains were brought here Monday by special train from that city. They were met at the depot by some 100 of his brother Odd Fellows from this, and neighboring lodges who marched two and two in solemn procession from the depot to the Christian church where an impressive service was conducted by Rev. J. H. Wood of Shelbina, after which his body was borne quietly away by his brethren to their own cemetery in this city, where with touching ceremonies it was laid tenderly down to await the resurrection. The grass will grow green and the wind will come and sing a requiem above his sleeping dust, but the wonderful love and sympathy portrayed by his brethren, as they gathered from far and near to lend him a helpful hand in his last hours of suffering and to pay to his silent form, cold in the embrace of death, a last tribute of respect, will long be remembered by those who stood aside in tearful wonder and said "behold how they loved him." Man's humanity to man! Would to God that the nations of the earth were bound together by such love as this! In his last days his brethren supplied every want, satisfied every desire so far as they could, but they could not stay the hand of death that had fastened itself upon him, for that dread disease, cancer, had taken hold of his vitals. All they could do was to alleviate his suffering and await the approaching end, which came peacefully. This they did. His chair in the lodge is vacant, his voice in hushed, but the spirit manifested by his brethren will live beyond the confines of time far out into eternity. Shelby County Herald, Shelbyville, Missouri, 11 Jan 1911, Page 4, column 2 Bruce Burger Dead. Bruce Burger died at the home of E. W.Harlan in this city at an early hour Sunday morning. Mr. Burger formerly resided in this county near Kirby, and was a member of the Kirby Odd Fellows lodge. About a year ago he and his two daughters, Misses Mae and Naomi, moved to Mays, Oklahoma. Some weeks ago Mr. Burger was stricken by illness and physicians advised an operation. He went to Wichita, Kansas, where an operation was performed. His funds became exhausted and 3 weeks ago his brethren of the Kirby lodge, learning of the situation, brought him here and had him cared for until death came. His affliction was pronounced cancer of the stomach. The two daughters above mentioned survive. The wife died about eight years ago. The body was taken to Shelbyville Monday afternoon on a special train, where funeral services were held at the Christian church conducted by Rev. J. H. Wood, and the remains laid to rest beside the body of the wife in the Shelbyville Odd Fellows cemetery. The following from Kirby vicinity were here Monday and accompanied the body to Shelbyville: J. W. Goe, Lee Baker, Frank Gwynn and Frank, Paul and John Tanner, Jacob Kuntz, John Gillispie, James Gwynn, Robert White and W. O. L. Jewett, of this city, attended the funeral. The service was attended by a large crowd, there being about one hundred and fifty Odd Fellows present to pay a last tribute of respect to their deceased brother.
