Steinshouer, 82 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Buddy was born January 7, 1934 on the family farm southeast of Franklin on the river bottom road in Franklin County, Nebraska, the youngest of two sons born to John Benjamin and Cleda Mae (Reams) Steinshouer. On July 30, 1953 he was inducted into the United States Navy, serving his country during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on April 25, 1957. When he returned home from the service, Buddy engaged in farming with his father in Franklin County near Riverton, Nebraska. On May 20, 1956 he was united in marriage to Thelma L. Suggs and to this union three children were born: Craig, Russel, and Peggy. The family made their home on the farm northwest of Riverton on Spring Valley Road. During the time Buddy was farming, he also accepted a part-time position with the Soil Conservation Service in Franklin. In 1966, Buddy continued his education studying soil conservation from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1970. After he graduated, Buddy’s training was in Fairbury, Nebraska from 1970 – 1971 and then in Auburn, Nebraska he was employed as a Soil Conservationist from 1972 – 1974. He then relocated to Holdrege, where he accepted the position of District Conservationist for Gosper, Kearney and Phelps Counties until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 and was very active in the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge in Holdrege, where he served as Past Exalted Ruler. Buddy enjoyed golfing and fishing, was an avid reader, and playing cards with his friends was always a highlight. He also made many friendship bonds during the years on bowling league and loved to travel as well. Buddy was a die-hard Husker fan, but most of all he loved the time spent with this family. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lafe R. Steinshouer who passed away at the age of two; and a cousin, James Mucklow who was like a brother to him as well. He leaves to celebrate his life: his wife of 60 years, Thelma Steinshouer of Holdrege; two sons: Craig Steinshouer and his special friend, Rona Sutton of Republican City, Nebraska and Russel Steinshouer and his wife, Dee of Holdrege; daughter, Peggy Billeter and her husband, Mike of Holdrege; eight grandchildren: Aleece Crooker and her husband, Matt, John Steinshouer and his fiancé, Holly, Jason Steinshouer and his wife, Kerissa, Joni Collins and her husband, Rye, Lance Steinshouer, Toni Wells and her husband, Nick, Toby Johnson and his wife, Chelsea, and Taylor Johnson; twelve great-grandchildren: Cloey and Ryker Crooker; Jaxson and Isaac Steinshouer; Kasyn, Kennedi, and Kamryn Collins; Charli, Pyper, and Harley Wells; and Londyn and Livvy Johnson; and a host of family and friends. Funeral Services for Buddy L. Steinshouer will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Murray Jones officiating. Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege following the services with military honors provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Navy Military Honor Guard. The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements.
