He was only eight years old when his father, Capt. Burton Freeman, answered the country's call at the beginning of the Civil War. When yet a young man he traveled by train with his father and family to Warren, Ill., which then was as far west as the railroad came. He was only eight years old when his father, Capt. Burton Freeman, answered the country's call at the beginning of the Civil War. When yet a young man he traveled by train with his father and family to Warren, Ill., which then was as far west as the railroad came. There they joined a wagon train for their crossing of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. After living there several years he returned to New York state and on Dec. 25, 1871, was united in marriage with Miss Hattie E. Revman of Greenwood, N.Y. To them were born four children all of whom survive. In 1883 they moved to Brown county, Neb., where they settled on a farm near Ainsworth living there for 11 years when they moved to Iowa, settling south of Fontanelle. He and his wife united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Fontanelle by letter on May 6, 1894, under the pastorate of Rev. J.T. Weaver. Nov. 24, 1910, the wife passed away after a short illness. Just prior to the death of his wife he entered into partnership with Fred W. Kaemmerer operating for nearly 20 years a general mercantile store under the firm name of Kaemmerer and Freeman. In 1928 he severed his connections with the business house and retired to his home to spend his later years in less strenuous activities. As advancing years crept on him he disposed of his home with its attendant cares and spent the remainder of his life in the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.L. Dunlap, except for occasional visits in the homes of his other children. He had been in failing health the last few years. On Saturday, May 6, he suffered a stroke from which he was unable to rally, death coming to him at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dunlap, Sunday evening, May 14, at the age of 80 years, two months and five days. The children, Mrs. Mabel Dunlap of Fontanelle, E.B. Freeman of Prescott, R.L. Freeman of Kansas City and Mrs. Helen Neville of Toledo, Ohio, were present at the time of his last illness. Three grandchildren also survive.
