Burgess Martin, the subject of this sketch was born at Swaffhamprior, Cambridgeshire England, February 28, 1848. His parents, William and Ann Martin, spent their entire lives in England. Their children were nine in number. In 1869 having attained his majority, he determined to establish his home in the New World. Burgess Martin, the subject of this sketch was born at Swaffhamprior, Cambridgeshire England, February 28, 1848. His parents, William and Ann Martin, spent their entire lives in England. Their children were nine in number. In 1869 having attained his majority, he determined to establish his home in the New World. He came to the United States and located in Michigan for a period of two years and came to Marion Township, Linn County where he has resided continuously forty four years. The wife and mother departed this life in April, 1902 and rests on Oak Shade cemetery. He has left to mourn his loss, Charles of Lisbon, Mrs. Mary Vahl of Marion, Oscar of Cavour, South Dakota, Clarance of Alburnette and Florence the youngest, who has been home and sole companion for thirteen years. Also John Clark a stepson of Cavour, South Dakota. He leaves of his father's family, William and Mary Ann of Cambridge, England, Robert and Richard of Marion and Frederic of Martelle. Burgess as he was familiarly known was possessed of a forceful character yet sympathetic and tender as a child and his great heart made him a lover of children. His striking personality was felt where ever he went. He will be missed on the street and in the home. He was a kind neighbor, a true friend and a good husband and a loving father. Dr. A.J. Northup conducted the funeral services at the residence, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There was a very large attendance of neighbors and friends.
