Burt Franklin Rossiter, the son of Charles and Pauline Stockman Rossiter, was born Jan. 3, 1894, in Clay County. He received his early education in Lake Center and later attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. He worked as a farm laborer and carpenter before enlisting in the Navy during World War I, where he worked as a carpenter at the Navy base in Newport, R.I. After his discharge, he started farming the original Rossiter farm in Riverton Township. He married Pearle Manning on May 20, 1920, in Spencer. Following their marriage, the couple continued to farm until his retirement in 1962, when they moved to Spencer. Burt had been active with the Clay County Fiar program since 1929, serving on the Board for many years. He was one of the founders of the 4-H Committee in 1931, which started organized 4-H in the county. He was the first boys leader of the group. He was also active with the Little Sioux District watershed program which included 12 counties in Northwest Iowa. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Parker Historical Society, Farm Bureau, Spencer Farmers Elevator, SPAT, American Legion for 75 years, Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Eastern Star, Golden K, Fishing Club and was named Spencer Citizen of the Year in 1984. Mr. Rossiter was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. He is survived by three sons, Roger Rossiter and his wife, Maxine, of Worthington, Minn.; Lon Rossiter and his wife, Mary Lou, of Spencer and Don Rossiter and his wife, Elsie, of Spencer: eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; on sister, Lilly Rossiter of Los Angeles, Calif. And on sister-in-law, Helen Rossiter of Spencer.
