He passed away in Canandaigua, New York, on August 7, 2021, at the age of 92. When he was 10 years old, Byron's family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he attended Roosevelt and East High Schools, graduating from East in 1946. He attended Graceland Junior College and Kansas University, majoring in Business Administration and graduating in 1950. In 1953 he accepted a job with General Electric in Schenectady, New York, where he worked for 34 years in various advertising and sales planning jobs, until he retired. He met his wife, Phyllis, at the Stone Church in Independence, Missouri. They were married October 24, 1954, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lamoni, Iowa. In October of 2020, they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Following his first GE assignment in Schenectady, Byron was transferred 7 times - to York, Pennsylvania, back to Schenectady, then to Chicago, Utica, New York, Kansas City, Missouri, back to Utica, and finally to Syracuse. For his last GE assignments in Utica and Syracuse, totaling 30 years, he and Phyllis lived in New Hartford, New York, where they raised their two children, Ann and Larry. After retirement, Byron and Phyllis moved to Bend, Oregon, in 1996. They lived there for almost 4 years, until they moved to Canandaigua, New York in 1999, where they enjoyed their home on Canandaigua Lake and joined the First United Methodist Church. Byron always believed that the road to a happy life was to always keep busy. Prior to retirement, he and Phyllis traveled domestically and internationally and enjoyed skiing, tennis, and bicycling. For 10 years, they bicycled extensively, training for and completing the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) - a 7-day, 400-500 mile ride across the state of Iowa. For 10 years after retirement, he worked 2-3 days a week bookkeeping for his son Larry's business, Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters. On another day, he volunteered at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. He worked out at the YMCA and took care of his home on the lake. Byron was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lawrence Werges, and wife, Catherine; and his sister, Kathryn Beck and husband, Ted. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his son, Lawrence "Larry" Werges and his wife, Jennifer; his daughter, Ann Wall and her husband, Michael; and his four grandchildren, Thomas Wall and his wife, Trécy (New York, New York), Christopher Wall (Paradise Valley, Arizona), Stephen Werges and Lillian Werges (both of Canandaigua, New York). Interment will be in a family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa, where his parents are also buried. The funeral service was held at the Lamoni United Methodist Church, Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2021, with Pastor Kasey Vogel officiating. Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. ---- Memorials may be given to the Lamoni Bike Trail c/o Lamoni City Hall.
