Byron was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical and Reform Church in Walnut. He graduated from the Walnut High School with the Class of 1950 before entering the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean War until his honorable discharge on February 15, 1955. During his two years in the service, Byron met Maxine Rose Gill on a vacation pass in Salt Lake City, UT and the couple married on October 9, 1954 in Clawson, UT. The couple made their home in Walnut and Byron began farming in 1955. Five children were born to this union: Rodney, Cheryl, Karen, Jean, and Lisa. Byron farmed in the Walnut and Avoca areas and also drove the school bus for the Walnut Schools. He loved card clubs, gardening, and yard work, and was a great dancer. He loved to travel and successfully made it to 47 states in the US and their capitals. He enjoyed eating out with friends every Friday night and he especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He served on the board for the Peace Haven Retirement Community, East Pottawattamie County Fairboard, the Pottawattamie County Extension Council, and for the Walnut Historical Society. He was a member of the Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 in Avoca and the Korean Last Man’s Club. He was very active in 4-H, serving for seventeen years before he became an Honorary member. Byron died at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday, December 19, 2013 having attained the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 29 days. Along with his parents, Byron was preceded in death by his wife Maxine. He is survived by his five children; Rodney Lebeck and his wife Lorraine of Walnut, Cheryl Lebeck of Walnut, Karen and her husband George Threadgill of Milan, TN, Jean and her husband John Romano of Omaha, NE, and Lisa and her husband Darwin Holtz of Avoca; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister Carole and her husband Marvin Schroder of Walnut; special friend Rula Sacco of West Valley City, UT; other relatives and friends. Pastor Steve Lewis officiated the 1:30 p.m. funeral service at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut on Monday, December 23, 2013. Marge Kobs and Jeff Krueger provided the music. Military rites were conducted by the Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut. Honorary casket bearers were Sam Threadgill, Amanda Lebeck, Grace Holtz, Nicole Threadgill, Jennifer Romano, Justin Romano, Jayme Romano, and Savannah Romano. Casket bearers were Darwin Holtz, John Romano, Adam Lebeck, George Threadgill, George Threadgill IV, and Brandon Ratashak.
