Included in that party were at least five families whose descendants were to play an important part in the early settlement of the Moscow District. They were Elias Huffman and his cousin, Michael Huffman, William Foster,Nathanel Card and Caleb Brown. Elias Huffman and Michael Huffman founded homes in the North Fredericksburg. William Foster drew land at Northport in the County of Prince Edward, and Nathanel Card and Caleb Brown located on farms in the Township of Adolphustown, the most southerly and smallest township in the county, and made famous because of its being the landing place of the Loyalists in 1784. Adolphustown became famous for another reason, It was the boyhood home of Canada's first Prime Minister, Right Honourable Sir John A. Macdonald. This small township, only three and a half miles square, made history for Canada in after years by sending to the legistures no fewer than eleven representatives, and every one a Loyalist. (Page 4 - Fourth Paragraph) Peter Huffman, a second cousin of Elijah and Jacob Huffman, and son of Michael Huffman, settled in 1826 on Lot 51, in the Fourth Concession of the Township of Camden, the last lot in the township and next to the boundary of Portland Township. Samuel Foster, having heard through his brother of the opportunities to be had in the Huffman Settlement, decided to cast in his lot with the others, and in 1827 started clearing on Lot 48, in the Fourth Concession. Caleb Brown, Stephen Card, and John Card selected farms on the west side of Moscow, near Mud Lake, and so these seven families formed the nucleus of the first settlement, which afterwards became known as "The Moscow District". Caleb Brown, Valentine, Brown, Joseph Brown, Chester Brown and Lindley Brown also appear in the list of Family names in the book.
