The Marion Sentinel Thursday April 4, 1895 At her home in Marion, Iowa, March 29, 1895, Celesta E., wife of John Elrod. She was the daughter of Hanson and Sabra Crosby, and was born in Plymouth, Maine, July 28, 1840. She came with her parents to Marion, Iowa, in 1855, and has resided in Marion and vicinity till her death. She was married, Feb. 1, 1865, to J. R. Elrod. Besides her husband, she leaves three sisters, Mrs. O. Clark, of Central City, Mrs. Ellen Lord of Detroit, Maine, Mrs. Viola, of Altoona, Kansas, and one brother, Asa L. Crosby, of Central City. Mrs. Elrod, was a woman of a retiring disposition, kind and gentle in all her ways, and esteemed by all who knew her. She had no children of her own, but no one could have had a deeper interest in, or tender sympathy for homeless children. She had taken and adopted successively three, whom she raised to manhood and womanhood. Over two years ago, Mrs. Elrod's health seemed to improve a little, and she adopted the 4th, a little girl, born, Nov. 4, 1892, which they named Ruth. Mrs. Elrod has been suffering from cancer during the last three years. Occasionally she would have a relief, and she and her friends would have some hope of her recovery but the relief was only temporary. As the end of her life drew near, her suffering grew more severe. But the severity of her suffering never made her forgetful of the child, and a smile on the child's countenance never failed to light up her own. Her only desire for months to live, was that she might assist her husband in caring for it. She had been expecting death for weeks, and had expressed her trust in Christ, and seemed to be looking to that better country where sin, sorrow, death and parting never enter. The funeral service was held at the house, conducted by Rev. Alex S. Marshall and attended by a large number of friends.
