Harback was born in Worcester County, Massachusetts, on June 11, 1830, and died at his home in Schaller, Iowa, Thursday morning, May 20, 1909, aged 78 years, 11 months, and 9 days. Deceased grew to manhood in his native state and March 3, 1853, he was married to Miss Elvira T. Bancroft. To this union five children were born, two of whom, one an infant and the other a daughter of sixteen years, preceded him to the other world. The three living are Charles A, of Royal, Iowa, Everett E., of San Jacinto, California, and Mrs. Hattie E. Mill, of Hennessey, Oklahoma. At the age of twenty Mr. Harback decided to live a christian life, and was converted and untied with the Congregational church, but when he came west he united, by letter, with the M.E. church, of which he remained a faithful and consistent member to the end of life. In April 1855, he came to Iowa, locating in Delaware county. While living there the Civil War broke out and hearing his country's call, Mr. Harback enlisted in Co. K., Twenty-first Iowa Volunteers, and served his country three years. In 1870 he moved to Buena Vista county and in 1882 came to Sac county. ---- On January 11, 1863 he fought in his one and only battle, the Battle of Hartville, Missouri. Reports do not indicate he was wounded and, in subsequent affidavits seeking a pension, he never claimed he was wounded. During the return to the regiment's base in Houston, Missouri, Calvin, like many other suffered from tremendously from the harsh Missouri winter weather. Calvin developed severe rheumatism in his left leg from which he never recovered. He remained with the regiment for several months, but was left behind in a Milliken's Bend hospital when his regiment went farther south on April 30, 1863. Records from the St. Louis hospital indicate he was not even admitted until May 10, 1863 (i.e. 25 days after the He was treated there, he says he had an "operation" on the leg, received further treatment for rheumatism in Iowa hospitals until April 29, 1864, and he was then transferred to a Veteran Reserve Corps. Postwar, he applied for an invalid pension and repeatedly referred to his rheumatism and what he said was resultant heart disease. In an 1889 affidavit supporting Calvin's application, a comrade from the regiment said "at one time fears were entertained that the limb would require amputation." Invalid pensions required examination by a Board of Surgeons to confirm the claimed disability and its extent. Calvin was examined three times by such Boards. He complained that his left leg was "lame & painful much of the time. It hurt. He made similar statements to a Board of Surgeons in 1892 and the surgeons reported, "Applicant states that during the war he was confined to his bed with inflammatory rheumatism with swelling of knees and ankles, has not been confined to bed with rheumatism since that time, left leg troubles him more than the right - one, for measurements see diagram. The only evidence we have of rheumatism is applicants statement and the heart condition. As indicated, he still had two legs, although the left leg continued to bother him more than the right leg. A medical report from 1898 said the rheumatism was "well marked in both shoulders joints & not so well marked in knee joints no changes in tendons muscles or enlargement of joints.
