Neptune, 85, of Pittsburg, died at 2:55 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Sable Care Center, Aurora, Colo., after a lengthy illness. He was born April 8, 1916*, at Pittsburg, to Jasper D. "J.D." and Tennie Gibson Neptune. He attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1934. In 1950, he graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in chemistry. He was a resident of Pittsburg most of his life. Mr. Neptune retired from the Kansas City Southern Railroad in 1979, after a 40-year career as a fireman and then an engineer. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served in combat theaters in World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, he served as a platoon leader in Europe. As a company commander his service included involvement in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the army of occupation in Germany for a year after the war. He served 18 months as a company commander in Korea during the Korean War. On April 26, 1937, he married Mabel Louise Allison. She survives at the home. Mr. Neptune was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Homemakers Sunday School class, Pittsburg Kiwanis Club, Pittsburg Masonic Lodge No. 187, York Rite Bodies, Mirza Shrine and Benjamin A. Fuller Post No. 64 of the American Legion. He was a former member and past president of the Pittsburg USD 250 Board of Education; a founding board member of Crawford County Mental Health Board; a former board member of the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross; and a founding committee member of the Little Balkans Festival. Additional survivors include a son, Dr. Calvin Neptune III of Aurora; a daughter Carol Lynne Carey of Fort Irwin, Calif.; a brother, Eugene Neptune of Pittsburg; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Theodore A. Inman officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, with full military honors conducted at the graveside by the Fort Riley Burial Detail. Friends may call after noon Tuesday at Brenner Mortuary Chapel, 114 E. Fourth St., Pittsburg, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenner Mortuary.
