Description	:	Calvin Ernest Kannegieter, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of John and Maggie (Finger) Kannegieter, on June 23, 1921, in Ackley, Iowa. He attended school at German Township School and Buck Grove School. Calvin was in the Army Air Force for three years. Read More	Calvin Ernest Kannegieter, age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of John and Maggie (Finger) Kannegieter, on June 23, 1921, in Ackley, Iowa. He attended school at German Township School and Buck Grove School. Calvin was in the Army Air Force for three years. Eighteen months of that time were spent in the 15th Air Force as a B17 bomber mechanic. He was discharged October 8, 1945. Calvin was united in marriage to Johanna Johnson on February 15, 1947, in the Bethel Reformed Church in Aplington. The couple lived and farmed south of Ackley for 11 years, then moved near Buck Grove, where they continued farming. They retired in 1984, and moved into Aplington a year later. Calvin was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington where he served as an elder and a trustee. He also was a member of the AMVETs and the Lion’s Club. In 2011, Calvin was able to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington DC. Calvin’s passion was farming and animals, especially horses. For many years, he enjoyed selling O’s Gold seed corn. Calvin took pleasure in golfing and the trips he and Johanna would take to Arizona and Jamaica in the winters. Calvin especially loved spending time with his family. Calvin died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa, from natural causes. He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Johanna; one son, Kerry Kannegieter on October 30, 1979; and two sisters, Evelyn Meyer and Francis Meyer. Calvin is survived by one son, Curtis (Debbie) Kannegieter of Littleton, Colorado; one daughter, Wava (Jeffery) Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer of Aplington and Willis (Sylvia) of Kesley, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 16, 2015, at Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington, Iowa Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church.
