Baney (July 27,1918 - November 8, 2005) Calvin Ervin Baney and his brother, Alvin, were born on July 27, 1918, at Olivet, SD to George and Mathilda Baney. The family moved to Sioux Falls when the boys were eight years old. They graduated from Washington High School in 1939. The joined the South Dakota Nation Guard with the 147th Field Artillery. Baney (July 27,1918 - November 8, 2005) Calvin Ervin Baney and his brother, Alvin, were born on July 27, 1918, at Olivet, SD to George and Mathilda Baney. The family moved to Sioux Falls when the boys were eight years old. They graduated from Washington High School in 1939. The joined the South Dakota Nation Guard with the 147th Field Artillery. They were activated sent to Fort Ord in California for training. Cal was on a troop ship headed for the Philippines when Pearl Harbor was attack. They were then ordered by radio to go to Northern Australia. While in Australia, Cal was burned on his legs. After healing, he was sent to Oklahoma for training in the infantry. He was then sent to Southern France where he was injured again. After the war, he returned home to South Dakota to live with his parents. He went to work at Midwest Beach Typewriter Company where he learned to repair typewriters. Cal then continued his career with Reedy Business Machines. Cal was active in softball for many years. He helped to organize games while in service. Cal continued to play softball when he returned to the states. He played on a team that was state champions for five years. He was inducted into the South Dakota Softball Hall of Fame in 1984. In 1946, while walking on Phillips Avenue with a friend, they ran into a friend who was with a fine lady named Nina. Nina Lou Everhart was from Canton, SD. Nina would go home on weekends. Cal would walk her to the train station and he would meet her upon her return. They were married on July 20, 1947, in Canton SD. They enjoyed softball tournaments, square dancing, and ballroom dancing. Survivors include his wife, Nina; his daughters, Kathleen Yellow Bird-Steele (Phillip) and Lisa Lehnhoff (Kenneth); grandchildren, Heather Fitzpatrick (Dave), Ben Lehnhoff, Sara Lehnhoff, Katherine Pilachowski and Joseph Pilachowski; and a special adopted daughter, Mary Hanson. Funeral Service Saturday, November 12, 2005 First United Methodist Church Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Visitation begins at noon on Friday with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 13th and Main.
