(Johanningsmeier) Schaekel; son, Richard (Susan) Schaekel; daughters, Linda (Gary) Fry and Delphia Mae Schaekel; sisters, Wilma Marendt and Leona Fenimore; brothers, Harold (Lois) Schaekel and Floyd (Carol) Schaekel; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6 at Hendryx Mortuary, 11636 E. Washington St., with calling there from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5. I.V.F.A. Comfort ‘You could always count on Calvin' Longtime firefighter loved family, church, department Calvin Schaekel was known for his wit, wisdom and reliability as a member of the Buck Creek Township Fire Department. "He was one of the best tanker drivers ever," Buck Creek Fire Chief Dave Sutherlin said this week after Schaekel, 82, died Sunday at his home of a heart attack. Schaekel had been diagnosed just a few weeks ago with cancer. At his funeral on Friday, he was remembered by family and friends for his wit, wisdom, reliability and his service to the community and to those in need. "He was a leader and a doer," said the Rev. John Sattler, who officiated at Friday's funeral in Cumberland. After the service, a procession that included a shiny fire engine bearing his flag-draped casket slowly moved from Hendryx Mortuary in Cumberland to stops at both Buck Creek fire stations, where firefighters waited to pay their respects. Schaekel lived less than a mile from the Buck Creek fire station in Mt. Comfort, where he had a big presence. He was often there helping with projects and joking with the younger firefighters. Schaekel was also a big part of the department's annual fish fry. "He was known as one of the bean guys because he helped with that part of the dinner," Sutherlin remembered in an interview earlier this week. Schaekel joined the fire service as a volunteer in 1965. He was chosen as chief in 1972 and 1973 and later served as a district chairman in the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association. As volunteers became scarce in later years, Schaekel was always available when needed, Sutherlin said. "You could always count on Calvin to stop at the station and get a truck to the scene (of an incident)," Sutherlin said. Other members of the Buck Creek fire-fighting force said the retired pipe fitter's training and experience improved the function of the whole department. "He kept you from repeating mistakes," said Ross McMahan, a former chief of the volunteer fire department. Schaekel often counseled new or inexperienced firefighters when he saw something out of place or something that he knew was dangerous. "He had probably done it before," McMahan said. "If it was dangerous, he would tell you not to do it." Schaekel was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the father of three grown children. His activity with the fire department decreased during recent months because of his illness, but his love of family and community did not diminish. His wife, Miriam, said the fire department and the church were the center of his life away from family. "We had a lovely day together, Sunday," she said of her husband's last day. Schaekel's procession wound up at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in New Palestine, where he was laid to rest. "There are two words that always described Cal — good stewardship," Sutherlin said.
