Published in the Rochester(IN) Sentinel, Monday, May 24, 2004 Calvin Lee Braman, Nov. 8, 1924-May 21, 2004, Calvin Lee BRAMAN, 79, of 2863 E. 300 S., Rochester, remembered fondly as "Cal," passed away at 4:25 p.m., Friday at Life Care Center of Rochester. He had been a patient for a short period of time. Born and raised west of Rochester at "The Home Place" to John and Lily Alley Braman, he married Evelyn Van Duyne on November 23, 1946, in Rochester. Cal lived his entire life in Fulton County. Early in their marriage, he and Evelyn lived near the twin bridges west of Rochester, 400 West and 100 North, where he milked cows for Russell Wilson and farmed with his father. Later, he moved to the Woodrow community, south of Rochester, and drove a school bus for Rochester Township for nine years and also farmed. Having grown up in a politically active family and serving as a Republican precinct committeeman, Cal was elected to serve as the Fulton County Treasurer in 1956. In 1964, he was hired by the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners. While serving there, he was a dedicated employee serving as a field auditor and later supervisor, until he retired in 1994. As he drove the tractor through the fields, Cal enjoyed humming and singing the same songs he called many years before for the Rural Youth square dancers. Many area adults will remember in their youth the ice cream socials on the Fulton County Courthouse square, hayrides and bonfires while he served as a 4-H adult leader of the Woodrow Sodbusters for 54 years. Fair week was always a special time for Cal. After his children completed their 4-H tenures, he began to watch his grandchildren in the arena and on stage. You may recall bingo echoing in the quonset at the Fulton County Fair, sponsored by the county fair board, when Cal served as a member. Not only is Cal known for his 4-H leadership career, but also for many other community and civic projects with which he assisted. As the coordinator of volunteers, the Christmas Basket Project of the United Ministries of Fulton County gave him much enjoyment with the fellowship of his co-workers and the joy and appreciation of the basket recipients. His faith was exhibited time and again while serving the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder and church treasurer for more than 30 years, along with the Geneva Center committee of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley. Cal was delighted during the evening of February 6, 2002, as he humbly accepted the 2002 Community Service Award from the Rochester and Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce. His gentle, yet effective leadership style was pointed out when he was recognized at the Indiana State Fair as the longest continuing active adult 4-H leader in Indiana, one of his numerous recognitions. He was active in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Rochester Lions Club, Nyona Lake-South Mud Lakes Booster Association, Fulton County Farm Bureau and the Republican Party. Yet he always had time for camping with his family and euchre parties with family and friends. Cal's greatest pride was the love of his family. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; three sons, William and wife Georgina, Combined Locks, Wis., Phillip and wife Monica, New Castle, Ky., and John, Fishers; three daughters, Judy Taylor and husband Russell, Plymouth, Patricia Rathbun and husband Cam, Akron, and Sherri Adamson and husband Teri, Rochester; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Marjorie Phillips, Rochester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bernice "Bing" Kolarich and Fern Hammond; and a brother, Emerson "Bud" Braman. His funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Rochester, with Pastor Ben Whitfield officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his father in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester, following the services. Family and friends may call at Foster & Good Funeral Home, 128 W. Sixth Street, Rochester, from 4-8 p.m. today or one hour prior to his service Tuesday at the church. The F. & A.M. Lodge No. 79 will conduct a memorial service in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that memorials be made to either the 4-H Council or the First Presbyterian Church.
