Stone was born in Clinton, IA on December 13, 1926, the son of Earl and Harriett May (Swailes) Stone. Cal graduated from Clinton High School in Clinton, IA, in 1946 and was a member of the first graduating class of Clinton Junior College in 1948. Cal then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1950 and later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley in 1958. He worked toward a doctorate degree at the University of Maryland as well as Drake University. Cal began his teaching career in 1950 in Dundee, IA, and then served with the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950-1953. After returning from Korea, Cal taught in Burt, IA from 1953-1955, and then began teaching in Boone, IA in August of 1955. During this time he began his family, and Cal was blessed with three children from his first marriage. He served as an industrial arts instructor until 1988. He also taught adult education classes for 20 years, was awarded a grant to teach industrial arts to elementary students in after-school programs, served on the State Industrial Arts Board, held various offices in the teachers’ organization, and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association. On November 26, 1976, Calvin married his best friend, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Doran in Boone, IA, and was blessed with three more children. He was an active member of Central Christian Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Trustees, and deacon. Cal was also active in Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity, was a member of the American Legion Post #56, and in earlier years was a Boy Scout Assistant Scout Master. Cal enjoyed woodworking, the outdoors, and working on his acreage building trails and planting trees. He loved helping others and completing carpentry projects around the church, the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace, and working as a contractor in the community. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant siblings, Arleta and Oliver; two brothers, Everett and Dale; and a sister, Vera. Cal is survived by his wife Maggie, of Boone; his six children, Marla (Mark) Dawson of Sioux Falls, SD; Mark (Julia) Stone of Boone, IA; Paul (Sylvia) Stone of Blue Springs, MO; Matt Stone (companion, Jill Johnson) of Boone, IA; Ben Stone (companion, Erin Lee) of Des Moines, IA; and Cara Stone of Ames, IA; five grandchildren, Kim Stone of Austin, TX; Jeff (Jessica) Stone of Asheville, NC; Jenna Dawson, (fiancé Ben Blake) of Sioux Falls, SD; Lucas Stone and Leah Stone, both of Blue Springs, MO; and many nieces and nephews from the Clinton, IA area.
