Description	:	Our dad, Calvin Robert Winkel, was born in Emery, SD, on August 15, 1925, to Otto and Fannie (Meinerts) Winkel and peacefully died on February 8, 2013, at the William F. Green State Veteran's Home in Bay Minette, AL. Dad reached the age of 87 years, 5 months, 26 days. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Emery, SD. He was baptized on December 31, 1939. Read More	Our dad, Calvin Robert Winkel, was born in Emery, SD, on August 15, 1925, to Otto and Fannie (Meinerts) Winkel and peacefully died on February 8, 2013, at the William F. Green State Veteran's Home in Bay Minette, AL. Dad reached the age of 87 years, 5 months, 26 days. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Emery, SD. He was baptized on December 31, 1939. Calvin enjoyed farming, working at M&M Furs, and tinkering in the scrap iron business. He served in the U.S. Army during World World II and upon his return he was united in marriage to Devona Osterlo on April 3, 1948. To this union five children were born: Tamara, Arleen, Debra, Becky, and Kim. Devona passed away at the age of 47 on February 23, 1975. On May 27, 1982, he was married to Theresa Groen. They enjoyed 14 years of marriage until her death on March 17, 1996. On November 20, 1998, he married Leona Schmidt in Foley, AL. They remained in Alabama until his death. Four years ago Calvin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and the disease slowly robbed him of his memories. We truly believe that in the last two years he still recognized us - if only for brief moments. Tamara cared for dad the past two years until his admittance into the VA home in January 2013. His survivors include two sisters: Janelle (William) Nichols of Canistota, SD; Myra Pence of Rapid City, SD; his children: Tamara (Allen) Rose of Foley, AL; Arleen Roth (friend, Ken Badker) of Mitchell, SD; Debra (Melvin) Stahl of Bridgewater, SD; Becky (Jim) Gales of Greeley, CO; and Kim (Diane) Winkel of Austin, TX; his step-children: Charles (Peggy) Groen of Beresford, SD and Lois Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Iris (Robert) Fahy of Texas. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 8 step-grandchildren: Tam's Family: Shawna (Kevin) Geri and their daughters: Nichola, Madison and Abbey of Lillian, AL; Ryan Rose of Simi Valley, CA; Brooke (Brad) Montz and daughter, Briley of Gulf Shores, AL and Charles (Kristin) Rose of Foley, AL. Arleen's Family: Tyson (Tamara) Denke and daughter, Mihret of Ruskin, FL; Erin Stahlecker (fiancé, Paul Dustin) and son, Zane of Brookings, SD and Amber (Dustin) Schnabel of Mitchell, SD. Debra's Family: Jamie Stahl of Omaha, NE; Kevin (Tara) Stahl and children: Jackson, Candice, and Clayton of Bridgewater, SD and Stephanie Stahl of Omaha, NE. Becky's Family: Brandy (Tim) Annable and children: Matthew and Reagan of Greeley, CO and Brian (Jessica) Gales and children: Tessa and Luke of Haxtun, CO. Kim's Family: Amy (Gino) Roussin and their children: Maxine and Atticus of San Antonio, TX; Jason Winkel of Austin, TX; Brittany Winkel and her children: Malachi and Lily of Austin, TX and Jacob Winkel of Austin, TX. Step-Grandchildren include Chad Groen, Jennifer Schmitt, Chris McDonald, Jason Johnson, Doug Johnson, Stacy Watembach, Nancy Royston, and Erik Roth. Calvin was preceded in death by his wives, his parents, one brother, LeRoy, one sister, Roselyn, a son-in-law, Russell Roth, step-son Gary Schmidt and three sisters-in-law: Helen Voelkers, Irma Letsche and Phyllis Harms.
