Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Calvin died Sunday, February 27 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab. Calvin died Sunday, February 27 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab. He was born October 19, 1924 at home near Wetonka, McPherson County, South Dakota. He grew up in the Wetonka, Barnard, and Bath areas. He graduated from the 8th grade at Bath, South Dakota, attended two years of high school in Leola, South Dakota, and then returned to the farm to help his family. Calvin always enjoyed farming and was good at it. In his younger years, you could find him racing horses and breaking mustangs. He also liked to rollerskate and dance and enjoyed many outings at the local roller rinks with his sister Lois and his brother Bud. He met Oriole at a dance at the Richmond Pavilion Dance Hall located at Richmond Lake on July 4, 1945. After a one-year courtship, they were married October 6, 1946. Together they shared 75 years of marriage. Calvin worked at Western Mutual Telephone Company in Leola until 1949 when they moved to a farm near Wetonka. In the fall of 1956, they moved to their current farm. Calvin worked part time at the Milwaukee Railroad in Aberdeen, until 1979. He continued farming full time with his son David. Calvin appreciated spending time with family and traveling. He was well involved, taking part in the Moose Lodge, Square Dance Belles & Beaus, Carlisle Township Board of Directors, a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and an ASCS County Committeemen. Grateful for having shared Calvin's life are his wife Oriole Nelson; children: Ron (Debbie) Nelson, Carol Berger, Dianne (Wade) Johnson, David (Janet) Nelson, James (Debbie) Nelson, Janet (Jim) Burt; grandchildren: Chad (Jill) Nelson, Jaime Nelson, Brian (Tamsin), Tiffany (Jeff) Schmoll, Stacy Ellis, Ryan (Liz) Johnson, Michael (Angela) Nelson, Matthew (Ashlee) Nelson, Jenny (Bill) Bailey, Kevin (Heather) Nelson, Sarah Burt, and Lindsey Burt; great-grandchildren: Carson, Austin, Brady, Jonathon (Auryanna), Kaitlyn, Justin, Daniel, Nolan, Makenna, Clinton, Tucker, Amelia, Taylor, Chandler, Garrett, Mikeala, Lucas, Sydney, Sarren, Wynterlyn, Alexis, Paisley, Dakota; and great-great-grandchild Layton; siblings: Lois Marko, Marlys Kraft and Darlys Marko.
