Brownfield were apprised of the fact that he had passed away, while sitting in his chair and listening to his wife read to him. No one knew just when he passed away, although his wife and son James and the colored aunty were all in the room. Aunty came in and said, "Is grandpa asleep," and the wife said that he was. The aunty said she would put up his hand so that it would not go to sleep, as she called it, but the hand slid down and she discovered that he was dead. Further examination and the doctor hastily sent for confirmed them in the opinion expressed by the colored woman. Capt. Brownfield would have been 83 years old the 9th of next July. he was born near Bentonville, Ohio, where he continued to reside until he came to Cherokee in 1874 where he has since resided. When a young man he married Miss Mary Watson, when she died, and in 1852 he was married to Miss Annie Broyles. Of this union two children survive him, James A. and Robert A. Brownfield, the former who was in the room when he passed away. Capt. Brownfield was a man among men and was loved and respected by all who knew him. In early life, under the preaching of R.S. Merril, later Bishop Merril, he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, but on coming to this city, he identified himself with the Presbyterian church and was a member at his death. he was the oldest Mason in the city, having passed to the sublime degree of Master Mason on May 28th, 1852. At the time of his death, and in fact ever since he has been in this city, he has been identified with the lodge here. He has an army record that gave him much prominence, he having raised Company F of the seventh Ohio Cavalry and was appointed captain, and served in that capacity for one year when he resigned. For years he has been afflicted and has hardly been able to come up to worn, on account of a stroke of paralysis which took his health away. He had been expecting to go for several years, and it was his wish that he might go peacefully without suffering. This desire has been gratified. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of his friends and Masonic and G.A.R. brethren. The Rev. M.E. Bramhall of Baxter Springs preached the funeral discourse and was listened to with much interest. The wife remains with her two sons and three grandchildren. The order of Masons performed their beautiful ceremony at the church, and concluded at the grave, and his remains were interred in the city cemetery. A good citizen is gone and we all mourn.
