Mustered out 17 Oct 1848 at Alton, Illinois Andrew married Jane Hope Gilligan Mitchell, a widow, on 28 June 1849 in Madison county, Illinois. After their marriage, they moved to St. Louis, MO with Jane's mother and siblings. By 1856, Andrew, Jane, and her son, Benjamin Mitchell, had moved to Rochester township, Cedar county - where Andrew's parents had settled in 1841. By 1856, Andrew, Jane, and her son, Benjamin Mitchell, had moved to Rochester township, Cedar county - where Andrew's parents had settled in 1841. Enlisted in the Civil War 21 Sept 1861 at Wilton Junction, Muscatine co., IA in Co D. 11th IA Inf, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant at Davenport, 3 Oct 1861. On 6 June 1863, he was commissioned Captain of Co. F 11th IA Was mustered out on 18 Dec 1864 at King's Bridge, GA, with an honorable discharge. The above news was communicated to the county authorities by an official notice received yesterday, and the remains of poor Andy Walker now occupy a pauper's grave. He was always his own worst enemy and there are many old acquaintances who now have a sigh and a tear for the memory of the brave leader of one of Iowa's best companies of boys in blue. West Branch Times 28 Jul 1881 pg 1 col 5 Died at the Insane Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa July 24, 1881, Captain A.H. Walker, in his 52d year. Mr. Walker served in the Mexican war eight months. He went out at the breakout of the rebellion as a Second Lieut. of Co. H, 11th Iowa. During the siege of Vicksburg he was promoted to Captain of Co. F, same regiment. He served three years and three months. He leaves a wife, son and daughter to mourn his loss. He was taken to the hospital last April. ***************************************************** In a letter received 10 Dec 2014 A section of Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa was designated for the burial of patients who passed away while receiving care at the Iowa State Hospital (currently the Mental Health Institute) Andrew H. Walker was laid to rest in the hospital section of that cemetery. Unfortunately, most of our burial records were lost when a fire destroyed our administrative building in 1936. In addition, many grave markers were either moved or have greatly deteriorated, making it nearly impossible to locate exact plots. Although we do not have the exact location of his burial plot, we do have the following coordinates which were recorded in a ledger at the time of his death. Block 2 Row C No. 21 We are unsure how to interpret the coordinates at this time. However, current employees of MHI are volunteering their time in an effort to locate burial plots using GPS and metal detectors. This has been quite a lengthy process, but if new developments arise regarding your family member, I will certainly pass this information on to you. There has been a centrally located monument erected in memory of the patients buried at Forest Home cemetery. NOTE** It is still undecided as of yet if Andrew is at rest here at the Forest Home cemetery or if he was brought home to the Rochester cemetery in the family plot. In his pension file, there is a note from the attending physician at the Iowa State Hospital to his wife, Margaret Frain Walker, that he was buried and that she could come retrieve his body in the fall.In either case, a monument will be erected for Captain Andrew Walker in the Rochester cemetery, Cedar county, Iowa, in the family plot, as should have been done many years ago.
