Before the outbreak of the Civil War Augustus had gone to California with Jacob Kagy. Augustus returned to Ohio when after the war started. On July 22, 1862 he enlisted in Union army in Company I 90th O.V. I. He was commissioned as a lieutenant. In 1863 he was promoted to the rank of captain and was placed in command of Co. C of the same regiment. In 1864 he was promoted to the Quartermaster's Department of Civil Engineer Steadman's Staff at Chattanooga and served to the end of the war as chief quartermaster of the 23 Army Corps. He was mustered out of the army on 13 June 1865 in Tennessee. At the time of his discharge from the military he was experiencing health problems blamed on his combat experience. He was experiencing chronic diarrhea and fever with lung problems appearing later in life. He received a military pension for the illness and his wife received that pension after his death. He went to war as a Democrat but came out a Republican. This caused a rift with his father who was a life long Democrat. Augustus was active in public affairs. He was a presidential elector from Ohio, a trustee of the Ohio State Penitentiary and an appointed by President Hayes to the position of Government Agent (1878 - 1881) for the Crow Indians in Montana. In many speeches he had been heard saying that when he died he wanted to be wrapped in the Flag for which he fought. He edited and published the "Public Opinion" in Westerville Ohio for four years. For five years he edited the "Fairfield County Republican".
