Son-in-law of James Kilgore (1765-1813) Banister Stone was a planter in Greenville District. Sometime before May 1813, he and his wife settled on a plantation (600 acres) on Horsepen Creek which belonged to his father-in-law and in that same year became their property through inheritance. Writing his will 20 November 1839, he, however mentioned a residential tract of 780 acres at an unspecified location. Elected to the House, Stone represented Greenville in the Twenty-third (1818-1819) and Twenty-fourth (1820-1821) General Assemblies and was a member of the committees on roads, bridges, and ferries (1820-1821). Greenville chose him for the state Senate for the Twenty-eighth (1828-1829) , Twenty -ninth (1830-1831) , Thirtieth (1832-1833) , Thirty-first 1834-1835), Thirty-second (1836-1838) , and Thirty-third (1838-1839) General Assemblies. While in the Senate, he served on the committees on vacant offices (1828-1833) ; religion (1828-1839) ; grievances (1828-1839) ; roads, bridges and ferries (1830-1835) ; and the judiciary (1838-1839) . Locally he was a militia captain. He married Elizabeth Kilgore, daughter of James Kilgore and Keziah Greer. They were the parents of six children : William H. , James A. , Maria Louisa (m. William Goldsmith) , Jesse Kilgore, Elizabeth Keziah, and Andrew Jackson. Banister Stone was deceased by 5 July 1844 when his will was proved." ___________________________________ Source: Greenville Mountaineer Date: 28 June 1844 Died at his residence in Greenville District on the 15th inst. , the Hon. Banister Stone in the 67th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Virginia and removed to this District about fifty years since. For eighteen years he represented the District of Greenville in or the other branch of the State Legislature. He was a man of great integrity of purpose, and endowed with a strong and vigorous mind. He was silent and unobtrusive in his manner, but no man possessed more firmness or decision of character. In early life he had to contend with poverty and the want of a good education; but he was a man of great prudence and industry, and accumulated a large property. He was a wise man and showed his wisdom in his attention and devotion to his own affairs, without interfering with those of others. He has left behind him a large family and numerous friends to regret his loss.
