Chace, 91, one of the last New Bedford whaling masters, died yesterday at St. Luke's Hospital after a short illness. A native of Dartmouth, Mass., Capt. Chace pursued whales more than 40 years. He first went out as a youth in a vessel his father captained. He rose through the ranks until he won a master's rating in charge of his own vessel in the J. and W. R. Wing fleet, which plied the South Atlantic. Capt. Chace was a whale fisherman until the industry went out of existence here many years ago. He saw the pursuit of whales change from the old lance and harpoon method to the use of bomb guns in the later years.
