(CAPTAIN)CHARLES— PLUNGED DOWN TO DEATH. Captain Charles H. Ough Makes Mistake and Falls Between Two Cars – Funeral at Geneva. – Captain Claude Ough fell from a Northwestern freight near Smithwick, S. D., about 8:30 Thursday evening and was instantly killed. The body was taken to his home in Chadron. His mother, Mrs. Ough, received a telegram Friday morning giving the sad news of her son's death and saying the body would arrive here Saturday evening. Mr. Ough entered the train service of the Northwestern railroad four years ago next month as a brakeman and was head brakeman under Conductor D. E. O'Connell at the time of the accident. They and Rear Brakeman Unthank were bringing the local freight down from Deadwood to Chadron when the accident occurred. There is a hill a short distance this side of Smithwick, S.D., that freight trains often have to double over. As the train was going up this hill Thursday evening the trainmen saw that its speed was slackening and that they would have to cut the train in two and pull it to the top of the hill in sections. As head brakeman Mr. Ough would ordinarily have been at the front end of the train but for some reason he was in the caboose with the conductor and rear brakeman. When it was seen that it would be necessary to double over the hill Ough climbed on top of the train and started forward to be ready to uncouple. Unthank followed him closely and was but a few feet behind. The train was going slowly, not more than ten or twelve miles per hour, and both brakemen were walking along leisurely. As Ough reach the front end of the fifth car from the rear Unthank heard the globe of Ough's lantern rattle against the draw bars. He cried to Ough to look out and a moment later he felt the car rise as the wheels passed over some object. Realizing that Ough must have made a misstep in passing form the fifth to the sixth car and had fallen between the cars, Unthank ran back to the caboose and told the conductor and turned off the air. It was a solid air train and the train was stopped almost immediately. O"Connell and Unthank ran back along the track about ten car lengths and found Ough's body, life being extinct. Ough had fallen to the left and his body lay just outside of the rails on the east side of the track, the direction of the train being south. Both legs lay over the rail and were terribly crushed but not severed. The body was not mutilated. The left hand had fallen on th rail and a portion was crushed. The skull was fractured behind the left ear. This fracture resulted from the fall and was undoubtedly the cause of death. The left shoulder was also fractured by the fall. The body was taken to Chadron where it was prepared for shipment to Geneva. The deceased was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and Knights of Pythias and these orders assisted in caring for the remains and sent escorts to Geneva. Claude Harrison Ough was born in Henry county, Illinois, October 17, 1878, and was therefore 30 years, 10 months and 18 days old at the time of his death. He came to this country with his family in April, 1881. His father, Thomas Ough, a veteran of the civil war, died while Claude was still a lad. On the breaking out of the Spanish war Company G, First Nebraska, of which Claude was first lieutenant, volunteered for the United States service and when the company mustered in Claude retained his office. During the companies service in the Philippines he was promoted to be captain and was assigned to Company B of Fullerton. He remained in command of this company during the remainder of the war and was mustered out with it at San Francisco in 1899. Mr. Ough was married to Miss Anna O'Hanlon of Chadron at Chadron, and his wife survived him. They have no children. There also survive him his mother, one brother, Jud Ough of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Mord Pangle of Chadron. The funeral took place from the Methodist church in Geneva at 3 p. m.
