Bartlett ______ Captain George Bartlett, 48 years of age, and for many years the captain of the United States lighthouse tender Lotus, died this week from the effects of gas poisoning. Captain Bartlett, who resided at Harris Beach, was rushed to the Mary Alley hospital Sunday afternoon after he had been found unconscious in his home suffering from partial suffocation. He died at the hospital Monday failing to revive to the treatment, although he was placed in an oxygen tent at the local hospital. On Sunday afternoon, a neighbor of the deceased, Harry Palmer, went to the Bartlett home after the Chelsea Naval Base had contacted him, having failed to arouse anybody at the Bartlett residence. Palmer found Captain Bartlett lying on a couch in the living room. The gas range in the kitchen was turned on and was unlighted. An open window in the kitchen afforded some ventilation. Palmer noticed police and a few minutes later Police Chief Irving Chapman and Patrolman Howard Magee were at the Bartlett home. They worked over the deceased for an hour before any signs of recovery were made. Under the direction of Doctor John Cunney, the body of the captain was transferred to the Mary Alley hospital in the police ambulance where Captain Bartlett was placed in an oxygen tent because of the gravity of his condition. It was felt that he might survive at that time. Emmaline Bartlett, who was visiting with a sister at Lake Ossipee when the tragedy occurred. She rushed to his bedside when the news was transmitted to her, but he failed to revive. He is also survived by a son, Herbert Bartlett of New Bedford. The deceased was well known to yachtsman and mariners all along the coast. He had been commander of the light house tender Lotus for many years. A native of New York [sic], the deceased had resided in Marblehead since his marriage to Emmaline Martin, a former welfare commissioner in Marblehead, a few years ago. Previously he had lived in Malden. A veteran of the World War, during which he saw active service as commander of a submarine, the deceased holds membership in the local Post 32 American Legion, and also in Post I of New Bedford. He was a member of the Boston Marine society and held membership in the Portland, Maine B.P.O.E. His retirement from the service would have come in April of 1940. Funeral services were held yesterday from the Eustis Funeral parlors. (Published August 29, 1935 in the Marblehead Messenger)
