Description	:	Capt. George Shearman James Jr. USN (Ret.) died on 13 April 1980 in Arlington, Virginia. Memorial services were held at the Naval Academy Chapel on 16 April with interment in the Academy Cemetery. Appointed to the Naval Academy from the State of Maryland, he was graduated with the Class of 1932 and proceeded to sea duty in PENSACOLA, followed by assignment to flight training. Read More	Capt. George Shearman James Jr. USN (Ret.) died on 13 April 1980 in Arlington, Virginia. Memorial services were held at the Naval Academy Chapel on 16 April with interment in the Academy Cemetery. Appointed to the Naval Academy from the State of Maryland, he was graduated with the Class of 1932 and proceeded to sea duty in PENSACOLA, followed by assignment to flight training. After having been designated naval aviator, he served in a fighter squadron aboard RANGER for two years, then had a year in MISSISSIPPI before switching to patrol aircraft and taking part in the first mass flight to the Philippines. During World War II he put in commission and took command of the sea plane tender CASTLE ROCK, serving in various operations including escort duties, station vessel at Eniwetok, and finishing support. He later served as executive officer of the carrier WRIGHT and had command of the carrier PHILIPPINE SEA. Shore duty stations included Anacostia, Pensacola, Coronado, Washington, and the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island. He was awarded the Legion of Merit while on active duty, and he was transferred to the retired list in 1962. An all-America lacrosse player for two years while at the Naval Academy, he had also played football as a midshipman. He was an active golfer and a member of the Army-Navy Country Club, the Naval Academy Athletic Association, and the Naval Academy Alumni Association. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth, and is survived by his widow Dorothy; a son and a daughter; two stepchildren; a brother and a sister; and three grandchildren.
