Harrison Died Very Suddenly; Stricken On The Street; He was One of the Most Prominent Men in This Section, Having Filled Many Positions of Honor and Trust and a Veteran Soldier This community was shocked yesterday afternoon shortly after 4 o'clock when the fact was bulletined by the Times, that Capt. George W. Harrison, one of the most prominent and best known men in this section of the country, had died suddenly at the Kenny House, Piedmont, W. Va. Captain Harrison while feeling indisposed for some time, was able to be about, having paid a visit to this city on Saturday last. Captain Harrison a little previous to four o'clock yesterday afternoon was going up the Kenny House hill toward his home, accompanied by his brother, Mr. J. Forsythe Harrison, when he was stricken with congestion of the lungs and died within twenty minutes after being carried to the hotel. Dr. Z. T. Kalbaugh was called [in the meantime] but could do nothing to stay the hand of death. Captain Harrison was 74 years of age, and was a native of Wheeling, W. Va., where he spent his early manhood. When the Civil war broke out, he held a position in the transportation department of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad under J.B. Ford, then [agent] at Wheeling. As an expert telegrapher, he rendered valuable service to the Union army. He helped [???] the First West Virginia infantry and was captain and assistant quartermaster. He received two brevets -- [???] and lieutenant colonel from President Lincoln. Captain Harrison was stationed in Cumberland when Gen. Cook and Kelley were captured by Confederates and he barely escaped capture himself. He was then in the Eighth Army Corps. Capt. Harrison was assigned to a command at Romney, Va., now W. Va., which position he held until he was honorably mustered out, his services being no longer needed. He also resided in this city after the war, occupying what is known as the brick residence at the head of Harrison street. Capt. Harrison filled various positions, including ticket and coal agent for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Piedmont; private secretary to United States Senator Henry G. Davis; general passenger agent of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway later the head of the relief department of the West Virginia division of the road. He was also collector of internal revenue for the Sixth district of Maryland. He also served several years as Baltimore and Ohio Railroad agent at Meyersdale, Pa., and Piedmont, W. Va.; then went to the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh railroad, now the Western Maryland. He was a man of captivating personality, jovial, yet withal strongminded and resolute. He was as well known to the older residents of this city as he was at Piedmont, where he resided for over thirty years, prior to his death. He was married to Helen D. Whittaker, of Wheeling W. Va., January 1, 1861, by Rev, James Moon, rector of St. John's Episcopal church of that city. January 1 last Capt. Harrison and Mrs. Harrison celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage. One son, H. Frank Harrison, of New York, general sales agent for the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company, and three daughters, Mrs. Paul Millholland, Overbrooke, Philadelphia; Mrs. Robert F. Bopes, Lynchburg, Va. and Mrs. Doddridge F. Graham, Piedmont, W. Va. His brothers, besides J. Forsythe Harrison, are Col. Sam B. Harrison, a prominent business man of Piedmont, and Capt. Charles S. Harrison, banker, Somerset, Pa. Captain Harrison was one of the charter members of Ohr Lodge, A.F and A.M. of this city, and was one of the incorporators of the Second National Bank. His father was mayor of Cumberland at one time, and Harrison street was named in his honor during his administration. The time of Capt. Harrison's funeral will be announced later.
