Description	:	The most decorated officer of the 76th Troop Carrier Squadron in World War II, he flew the lead gliders in two operations: OVERLORD, the D Day invasion; and VARSITY, the Rhine crossing. He was awarded DFCs for each of these, as well as the Purple Heart for having his arm nearly taken off by a German 88 mm shell.
