Description	:	The following is the service record of Captain James Mitchell, compiled from his service record at the National Archives: Prior to the start of the American Civil War, James Mitchell had served as the First Corporal of Captain David Denny's Company, Lower Battalion, 10th Regiment of the South Carolina Militia. With the start of the war he enlisted, with most of this company, as the "Mount Willing Guards" on April 15th, 1861, at Mount Willing, South Carolina, for twelve months service. Read More	The following is the service record of Captain James Mitchell, compiled from his service record at the National Archives: Prior to the start of the American Civil War, James Mitchell had served as the First Corporal of Captain David Denny's Company, Lower Battalion, 10th Regiment of the South Carolina Militia. With the start of the war he enlisted, with most of this company, as the "Mount Willing Guards" on April 15th, 1861, at Mount Willing, South Carolina, for twelve months service. And was officially mustered into Confederate Service as the Third Sergeant of Company E of the 7th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 4th, 1861, at Aiken, South Carolina. He traveled with the regiment to Virginia, and on October 23rd, 1861, was elected as Brevet Second Lieutenant (Third Lieutenant) of the Company. He was admitted to the General Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia, on November 26th, 1861, suffering from typhoid fever, and recovered enough to be returned to duty on January 7th, 1862. With their twelve month enlistment expiring, he with many others would re-enlist for the duration of the war; as part of this re-enlistment the Company was reorganized, and Captain Denny left the service due to his age, in his place Mitchell was elected and mustered into service as Captain of the newly reorganized company on May 13th, 1862. He lead the company through the Peninsula, Manassas, Maryland and Fredericksburg Campaigns of 1862. On February 12th, 1863, he was furloughed for 27-days and returned to Mount Willing, returning to Virginia for the 1863 campaigns he was again furloughed on February 20th, 1864, and assigned to duty with the Recruiting Service in Edgefield District. Returning to Virginia, he was wounded in action during the 1864 Valley Campaign, and admitted to the General Hospital at Staunton, Virginia, from which place he was furloughed on September 27th, 1864. He would never rejoin the company, but remained in South Carolina for the remainder of the war. He officially surrendered himself and was paroled on May 19th, 1865, at Augusta, Georgia.
