Dublin Shore Ship Wrecked in Dense Fog Meteghan, September 26- Piled high on shore during a dense fog the schooner, "Village Queen", Captain James Publicover, Dublin Shore, owner, was a total wreck today, her crew ashore by little less than a miracle. The crash occurred during a dense fog at Bear Cove, four miles from Meteghan. The crew of six climbed the tall spars of the vessel as soon as she struck. The vessel's roll enabled five of them to jump across a narrow stretch of seething waters piled up during the storms which have raged in that section for the greater part of a week. The sixth, the cook, was hauled ashore with ropes. He was unable to get there himself as he had been injured when the craft struck. The fog was so dense that the men did not know where they were and they spent the night in the woods. First indication of the wreck was given when John F. Deveau of the Meteghan Shipbuilding Company, discovered a broken board on which were written the words "The Queen"- and later saw two men walking along the shore in aimless fashion. Commanding the vessel at the time was Captain William Publicover, son of the owner, with Andrew Publicover, another son, as mate. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse. Captain J.L. Publicover 1960 Bridgewater Bulletin Published: February 17, 1960. Funeral services for the late Captain James Leander Publicover, who passed away at the D.M. Hospital on Sunday, February 7th., were held from Knox Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. J. Posno, officiaiting, assisted by the Rev. A. Allen, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, of Lunenburg. The late Captain Publicover was the son of the late Leander and Amanda (Bell) Publicover and was born at Dublin Shore on May 28th., 1877. He was a well known sea captain, having followed the sea from the time he was fourteen years of age. He commanded both three masted and four masted schooners, among the many being the Virgina, W.N. Zwicker, James Slater, James W. Newsome, Laura Annie Barnes, Lillian E. Kerr, and Joan Kielburg. His experiences were many and varied throughout his long sea career. When in command of the W. N. Zwicker in 1912, he, with the assistance of his mate, Frederick Richard, son of Captain William Richard, of LaHave, rescued crew members of a distressed United States schooner, the Henry R. Tilton, off Cape Cod. For his epic sea rescue the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, presented the captain with an engraved gold watch and mate Richard with a gold medal suitably engraved. Prior to his retirement in 1942, Captain Publicvoer operated ships between Bridgewater and New Haven, U.S.A., carrying pulp and bringing return cargoes to Halifax. On many of these trips he was accompanied by his wife and family and it was in 1935 while on passage from New York that his eldest daughter, Muriel, passed away. The last of the fleet of ships, the Lillian E. Kerr, went down off the Bay of Fundy in 1942 after being in collison with a convoy ship. His son, William, was master and his son-in-law, John Richards, was mate. The entire crew of seven (several were from Dublin Shore) were lost. Only one body was recovered, that of mate Richards. On another occasion when in command of the four-masted schooner, Laura Annie Barnes, the vessel struck on Tuckernauck Shoal in Nantucket Sound enroute to New Haven with a cargo of ground wood pulp, and although every effort was made by the Coast Guard to pull her off, they were forced to abandon her and she sank in four fathoms of water. "It broke my heart to leave her," Captain Publicover is quoted to have said when interviewed by reporters after being landed with his crew in Boston. In his Eulogy of Captain Publicover's life on the day of the funeral, Rev. Allen opened his remarks from the Poet Laureate John Masefield's poem," I must go down to the sea in ships," and ended with the beautiful poem of Lord Alfred Tennyson, "Crossing the Bar." Messrs. G.E. Romkey, Carl Bush, Charles and Urban Bushen sang as a quartette most effectively "The Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. Fred Corkum accompanying on the organ. Other hymns were "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot me," and " Asleep in Jesus." The chancel was banked with beautiful floral offerings and the auditorium was filled to overflowing with many sorrowing friends and relatives, some of them having come a long distance in order to pay their last respects to one who was held in high esteem by all. He will be sadly missed in his home, church, and community. Surviving are his wife, the former Elfreda Bell; three sons, Bruce, of Dublin Shore; Charles, Pleasantville; Andrew, at present at Cross Island Light Station; two daughters, Virginia (Mrs. J. Richards), of Dublin Shore; and Dolly (Mrs. Robert Newcombe), Halifax; one brother, Charles, West Dublin; and four sisters, Dolly (Mrs. M. James), Addie (Mrs. William Adams), both of Lunenburg; Winnifred (Mrs. Victor Romkey), Crescent Beach; and Annie (Mrs. Isaac Romkey), Shelburne; also grand and great-grandchildren. Interment was made in the family plot in Knox Cemetery. Members of A.F. and A.M. Lodge, Riverport attended in a body and performed their last rites at the graveside.
