Church After an illness of three weeks, Captain James L. Smith, for the past 83 years a resident of Allen county, passed away at his home at 609 Holmes avenue late Saturday afternoon. He was one of the best known and most highly respected residents of the county, where he has spent almost the entire of his life, and a wide coterie of friends grieve today at the notice of his death. Captain Smith was born in Athens county, Ohio, on the tenth of July, 1826, but came to Allen county in 1830, when he was but four years of age. When the call to arms was sounded throughout the entire country at the beginning of the Civil war, he was one of the first to respond. He was at that time living in Westminster, and here he enlisted for the service of his flag. He joined the D company of the 151st Ohio Volunteer infantry, of which company he was made captain. He later joined the company E of the 180th O.V.I., serving in that company as lieutenant. He served till the end of the war. For many years he was a resident of Westminster, where he remained until 1879. He was a stock buyer, and as the calls of his profession took him into all parts of the surrounding country, he made many acquaintanceships, all of which ripened into friendship. Throughout the length and the breadth of the county he was known and universally liked. In 1879 he gave up his work in Westminster and came to Lima, where he settled and entered the carpenter trade. For many years after that he pursued his new work in this city, until at the age of 70 years he retired from active life. He was 87 at the time of his death. Captain Smith is survived by four children, Mrs. Lee Shockey, Mrs. Marshall Brown, and Mrs. R. A. Kerr and Frank C. Smith. Four other children preceded the father to the grave. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock at the Second Street M.E. Church with Rev. W.W. Constein, the pastor of the church, officiating. The deceased was a member of the local G.A.R. chapter, and they will attend the funeral in a body.
