Description : John originally sailed from Belfast, Ireland to work on his uncle Ed Cook's wheat farm in Canada, then sailed back when he heard his mother was dying. When he returned he worked on a sailing vessel transporting grain on Lake Michigan before heading to Chicago to work for the Edison Electric Light Company. He found his calling with the Salvation Army, and headed to Springfield, IL for training.
