His death is first mentioned in a short notice in the PeeDee Times on October 11, 1854-- "Died in this town on the morning of the 20th September, Mr. John White, in the 68th year of his age." Since the Pee Dee Times was published only weekly, it was not until Wednesday, October 18,1854 that his full obituary was published; it is quoted below in full: "Died in this town on the 20th ult., Mr. John White, in the 68th year of his age. It is due to his memory and to his surviving family to say that one of the most polished gentlemen of the old school has fallen in our midst. He was no ordinary man. Early in life he, by his own merits and personal character, became allied in marriage with one of the first families in our district, and through his matured life sustained his irreproachable character as few men have done. He was liberally educated, and well knew the vantages so bestowed--and imparted the necessary home instructions to his own children, and prepared them to graduate at Columbia or any college. He was the counsellor, the light and the guide of his whole neighborhood on Black River, and in his school imparted such an example and such an instruction as will be long remembered. "A few years ago, with a view of advancing in life his children, he came to this town, and was elected Principal of the Academy of the Winyah Indigo Society's School in which occupation he died. In his death society has lost a polished gentleman, science and education generally a long and devoted servant; his family a kind husband and father` and master as has ever lived--and the Church a man of God in spirit and in truth.' Blessed man! thy meekness, thy deportment, thy usefulness, thy piety, all assure us that thy rest is with the 'pure in heart in heaven'." Although listed below as a sibling to several Green's, he was not a Green and married into the Green family. |
