Joseph Wilhide, another of our oldest citizens, died after a brief illness of pneumonia. Although age, insecure health and the infirmity of deafness had during the past five or six years kept the deceased more to himself than formerly, yet, in his death our people will directly recognize a loss. He was one of the most intelligent of our citizens, a constant reader of current standard literature, an able and correct thinker ; in spite of his infirmity, he was one of the really agreeable conversationalists in our midst, decided in his opinions, but peculiarly free from the bigotry and bias that one accustomed to thinking alone is apt to contract. The title of "Captain" was neither accidental, nor complimentary, he having held that office in the Mechanicstown Guards, a company organized here 48 years ago by Win. P. Jones, and which was at the time the finest military company of the county. The deceased married three limes and leaves a widow and three children, Robert, Taylor and Julia, wife of Col. John R. Rouzer. At the lime of his death he had attained the ripe old age of 78 years, 10 months and 6 days. His body was interred in the U. B. cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
