Description	:	Kenneth R. Simonds, 81, died at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield. He was the son of Raymond H. Simonds and Hazel Marion Spencer. He was raised in Belmont, MA and a graduate of Williston Academy. In 1942 he entered the Air Force and trained to become a pilot. In 1943 he received his wings, and before going off to war married Hope Audrey Wheeler on Christmas Eve. She was the daughter of Walter Kendall Wheeler Jr and Helen Francis Brown. Simonds, 81, died at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield. He was the son of Raymond H. Simonds and Hazel Marion Spencer. He was raised in Belmont, MA and a graduate of Williston Academy. In 1942 he entered the Air Force and trained to become a pilot. In 1943 he received his wings, and before going off to war married Hope Audrey Wheeler on Christmas Eve. She was the daughter of Walter Kendall Wheeler Jr and Helen Francis Brown. At 24 years of age he was commissioned a B-52 bomber, and during World War II was responsible for delivering supplies to allied ground forces and bombing military installations in Germany, including the Messerschmitt Aircraft plants in Regensburg, Germany. For his accomplishments he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, and his entire division received a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. For many years he was the plant manager of Precision Coating Company in Dedham, MA. He retired to Venice, FL, and in June of 1999 moved near his family in New Hampshire due to failing health. He was predeceased by his wife, Hope, in Jan 1997 in Florida. Family members include his daughter, Deborah A. Dineen of Jefferson; a son, Christopher G. Simonds of Englewood, FL; a sister, Barbara LaPlace of Ponce Inlet, FL; and three grandchildren. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, 919 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676. Private services and arrangements were under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster.
