Mr. Crooks formerly resided on North Fourth street, in this city and was for many years engaged in large real estate and landed speculations. While here he was prominently identified with the late J. L. Birkey, and others, in several large and important transactions. Mr. Crooks was a brave soldier, a good citizen and a man of unusual business abilities. The news of his death will be sadly received by his many friends in this city. --------------- Crooks, Lewis .....Great Great Great Uncle of Trent D. Johnson was born July 20, 1838 in Washington County, Pennsylvania to John and Barbara (Pixler) Crooks. He was one of eleven children. At the time of the outbreak of the Civil War he was a student at the Spring Mountain Acadamy, where he was studying to become a Doctor. On April 21, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Company "D" 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (3 months service) at Camp Jackson, Columbus, Ohio along with two of his brothers, James and John. Lewis served as a Private until he was discharged on June 28, 1861 at Rowelsburg, Virginia on a Surgeons Certificate of Disability, for some unknown reason. Lewis re-enlisted in Captain James M. Crooks Company, which became Company "I", 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on September 18, 1861 at Camp Meigs, Canal Dover, Ohio. He initially held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant . On February 13, 1862 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company "E". On February 25, 1862 he was transferred back to Company "I". On June 10, 1864 he was promoted to Captain of Company "I". Ten days after his promotion at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain Georgia, Lewis was severely wounded. He was shot through the upper back. Another wounded soldier fell on top of him in the trench, which prevented him from getting up, but he continued to shout commands. After the battle he was sent to a hospital at Lookout Mountain where he spent the next month. He returned to duty July 25, 1864. On October 1, 1864 he turned in his letter requesting the acceptance of his resignation. The letter reads as follows: Camp of the 51st Regt Ohio Infy vols Near Atlanta Ga October 1 1864 Brig. Gen W D Whipple A.A. G & Chief of Staff General I have the honor to tender my resignation as Capt of Co "I" 51st Ohio Infty for the follwing reasons. I I have two Lieutenants in my Co and only forty-six men in the aggregate. Twenty-four being present for duty. II I have been an officer in the volunteer service since the beginning of the Rebellion and my three years term of service has expired and I did not take advantage of the "veteran furlough". During this time I was promoted to a Captaincy and declined to be mustered in on that promotion until the mustering officer at Genl Stanley’s then Division Headquarters stated to me that it would make no difference with the length of my term of service. III I declined to receive the said muster because I had three brothers in the service who were enlisted men and "veterans" and also an infirm, aged and helpless mother who was and is dependant upon us for support. I therefore felt it my duty not to "veteranize" and did not, but to quit the service at the expiration of my time for the original three years and now in consideration of the above statements for the veracity of which I am willing to be sworn, I respectfully request the acceptance of my resignation. I am not indebted to the Government and was last paid by Maj ? to include the 30th day of April 1864. I am General Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant. Lewis Crooks Capt 51st Ohio Infy Comdg Co "I" Lewis Crooks was finally granted permission to resign and officially did so at Pulaski, Tennessee on November 17, 1864. After the war Lewis married Martha McCoy in Coshocton County, Ohio and then moved to Newark, Ohio where he lived for nine years at which point he moved to Columbus, Ohio. Lewis suffered from the wound he received at Kennesaw Mountain to the point where he became almost totally disabled. He died as a result of this wound on June 23, 1889 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, Ohio.
