Description	:	Capt. Obadiah inherited a large estate from his father, Obadiah Johnson. His Mother was Rebecca Brooks (Johnson). He was a prominent man in Canterbury: town clerk, selectman, represented the town in the General Assembly for fifteen consecutive sessions, surveyor of highways, leader in church and town affairs. Obadiah and Lydia joined the church in 1724 and he was called "a pillar of the church". Later they became among the first and formost supporters of the Separatist Movement. Obadiah inherited a large estate from his father, Obadiah Johnson. His Mother was Rebecca Brooks (Johnson). Obadiah and Lydia joined the church in 1724 and he was called "a pillar of the church". Later they became among the first and formost supporters of the Separatist Movement. He was expelled from the State Legislature because he was a deacon in the Separatist Church and was frequently persecuted. He was a deacon in the Separatist church from 1746 until he died in 1765. Property was taken from him to support the minister of the "regular" church from which the Separatists had withdrawn. He had considerable wealth at the time of his death in spite of all he had forfeited because of his religious convictions. Tradition says his death was due to an accident "after Seven months Confinement and sharp paine and Distress with a Broken Leg". The following military record belongs either to this Obadiah or to his son Obadiah III: in 1739 he was a Lt. in the Canterbury Military Co. and in 1740 was its Capt. He had service in the French and Indian Wars. Inscription: "Here lyes the Remains of Capt Obadiah johnson & one of cogn. ye first decn of ye chh of christ in Canterbury who departd this life april ye 10th 1765 in ye 63 year of his age who in ye time of life . . . servisable boath in church . . . & exampelary for piety abounding in acts of charity by the will of god served his jeneration & fell a sleep in jesus"
